the lack of music really was such a disappointment :( the soundtrack of the first game is so beautiful and haunting and sets the creepy yet whimsical tone of the game instantly. meanwhile LN3 is out here like go girl give me absolutely nothing
Main issue in it is that Tarsier clearly were setting up a story that connected the city with the Maw and the lands of The Pretender, and now with the podcasts and audio dramas the new creators have basically confirmed that all nowhere locations aren't even connected one to the other because it's just a Dreamscape and it takes away all of the interesting elements it had for World building
6:10 You know, I think my issue with the Supervisorās design is that they did not go crazy enough with it. If youāre going to make her like a bug, then why not go all in on it? Make her eyes insect like, make her arms jitter and stutter like bugs. Heck maybe even make it so after she loses her lower half she sprouts insectoid wings. And in terms of symbolism, use that too. Iām pretty sure the intention with her is that sheās supposed to be some kind of control freak, constantly watching and manipulating everything. Why not lean into that more? Maybe make it so instead of her just chasing you like most enemies, give her lots of security cameras and the ability to trigger traps across the building when one sees you? There is so much potential both in gameplay and storytelling/symbolism with an āoverseerā type role, but instead we get this.
Ln3 reminds me of how low budget movies tend to be better than high budget movies . Low budget movies are made with passion and love , while high budget movies are usually made just to make more money .
i hate how they tried explaining the world of little nightmares, and actually make it grounded in reality. Like borderline "It was all a dream" shit. Hate it, hate it, this game didn't happen, the podcast didn't happen
Are we also gonna talk about how the spider lady justā¦stops chasing you? Throughout all her chase scenes she takes like these 3 to 4 second pauses to just like snarl, or she like trips over something or she like just sits there for a second and then jumps itās like, just chase us what are you doing
I feel the biggest "they just copied their homework without understanding it" part is the Carnival. Its literally just the Maw. Fat people? Cause they were fat in the Maw. Why are people at the Carnival fat though? The secret is the food is people? Cause its in the Maw. Yeah but why is the candy made from people? How is human meat valuable ingredients.....for candy? They jist used those things without understanding that they had meanings behind them.
I also want to add that the leeches, hands, and bullies all represent a major boss. Like the leeches represent the guests you later fight in the game, the hands go with the doctor, and the bullies go with the teacher. The leeches also hint at the overarching theme of hunger (since they're trying to eat you) and the bullies hint at betrayal. But the beetles/bugs in this game don't really match with any bosses or overarching themes; they're just there because the last two games had them.
A bit on design: LN1-2 monsters are so iconic because they turn mundane into a nightmare fuel in unique, but logical way. All of them are people a little child can have reasonable fear of - a overly strict teacher from the school, an indifferent doctor, a creepy old janitor, and then hosting this gala of horrors are straight up characters from scary campfire stories - the Mirror Lady and a Tall Man (Slenderman, anyone?). And devs took those concepts, separated what exactly is scary about them, and cranked that one part to eleven. Like, why children can be scared of teachers? Because of a looming presence of authority in the class that a teacher is, always watching, always ready to punish. And that is precisely the sensation LN Teacher evokes with her anomalous neck - she's a constant watchful eye, looming above, surveying every corner, ready to pounce. Same for the Janitor - notice how his exaggerated features are all grotesque portrayal of old age? His skin is so wrinkled it flopped into his eyes, his withered arms turned into these gangly appendages, his legs barely visible under sagged flesh, it's a manifestation of the fear of old people and getting old yourself. Bosses are a separate nod - both are related to the protagonists, both are properly foreshadowed and when we finally defeat them - both their deaths reveal that the true nightmares were us all along, that this is not a victory - only another turn of the same cycle. Meanwhile LN3 is populated with just some generic monsters with no story attached to them whatsoever. Just generic spider monster because people with arachnophobia exist. Just a doll monster because old broken dolls are creepy. Some random giant guy, because megalomania. Etc. None are foreshadowed and to understand why are they even there you have to go on a hunt all across the internet for devlogs and twitter chats, aka - this info might as well not exist at all.
"in this game you're just kind of existing." That's literally LN3 summed up perfectly. I agree with everything you said. The game has kind of the look of the other little nightmares, but they missed the whole point of it. I get that the big final boss is supposed to be Otto and that this whole thing is supposed to be the characters going through different dreams I guess? And Otto having the eyes as his hands representing how he is always watching through children's dreams. But you can't really infer any of that through just the game alone. I really think they should have just left the game as the carnival with the puppet master guy being the first boss.
The pointless running around was ridiculous. In the first one it made sense how we were going to find the lady. And then in the second one it made sense for us to go find the thin man. This one has no plot. Nothing is intriguing us to continue to find the big boss at the end. Nothing is even telling us he exists or why. We're just wandering around lost, doing practically nothing aside from running from boring bosses basically.
I had so much hope for LN3 because the one who made it literally had a blueprint to follow. LN1 & 2 literally mapped out what to include, and etc for the new aspects of the third one. And they just paid attention to the face value of it rather than the actual details of it. I haven't even finished playing the third one. I got bored so I watched play throughs since those were more entertaining. Wish I could get my money back tbh. I won't buy a fourth one if they make one until I see play throughs of it and see if it's actually worth buying. Major props to the people who actually enjoyed this game. More power to them I guess?
I also realise LN3 doesn't have a main villain .LN1 has the goetia lady and LN2 Thin man. LN3 have nothing...unless it the psychiatrist guy in the end...but there was no implication, it just felt random just like baby. I think the twist is underwhelming. In LN1 the twist is is SIX became the villain in the end by eating the lady , LN2 mono was the thin man all along cuz six betrayed mono and the thin man was trying to undo it. The twist in LN3 just an imaginary friend....THE ENTIRE STORY OF LN3 IS LITERRALY JUMPING THROUGH MIRROR TO MIRROR AND IN THE END THEY JUMP ON LAST MIRROR AND BREAKS AND ALONE DIES.....LIKE WHAT
Lil nightmares 3, a victim to soulless capitalism. I already knew when I was watching a play through and they were like āyou have to pay for the costumesā š
Imagine being Tarsier and making 2 games showing the misery that was to live in Little Nightmares only for a new company to come in and completely turn it on its head by having the entire thing a be dream
