As an Aussie I haven’t really heard people talk about Japanese tanks being crap or funny. The most important thing is that they got them into theatres in SEA where their opponents didn’t have them. Even a weird light tank is terrifying and effective if you only have infantry with rifles

The default idea that Japanese tanks were bad depends on how you criticise them. For light infantry support across Asia they were evidently decent (especially given they faced little armoured resistance). So it was mostly just when they had to compete against the Americans that they largely failed

So many people overlook a key issue that Japan and USA had to contend with to a large degree, every tank had to endure long ocean voyages. Germany and Russia didn't face this to any extreme extent, and Britain only needed to cross the channel. Ship-able tanks placed massive constraints on weight, which compromised everything.

Japanese tanks weren't intended to fight other tanks, they were intended to support Infantry.  Even the larger cannon was intended to attack bunkers, not other tanks.

Yes, Japan was behind the Europeans, and U.S. in armor development, but they were primarily considering fighting other Asian Nations, primarily China, that had no armor at all.

To consider Japanese armor designs, as compared to U.S., and British tanks, is to consider a horse, compared to a Ford Model A.

Happy to see this one, and a bit satisfied that I actually already knew the majority of this information. Still, Japan manages to surprise me once again with the apparent existence of a TORPEDO TANK?!?! Thanks for that one, had no idea that existed.

I hope you'll consider doing an analysis of Japan's post-war tank industry too, at some point in the future. The STA and STB prototypes from the 50s and 60s respectively, which led to the Type 61 and Type 74, are quire fascinating, and their unique requirements for modern main battle tanks made for very cool vehicles, the Type 90 and Type 10. They have some of my favorite armored vehicles in the world, so I might be a bit biased, but I still think it'd be a great topic.

Their tank development is a result of big fish in a small pond to small fish in a big pond, big leap from pz.1 or 2's, t-26 and bt-7 to matildas, shermans and bazookas. They evolved but not fast enough.
