Swing wings are to planes, what pop up headlights are to cars.
100% cool factor.

In the early 80s I worked for an electronics manufacturer in Kansas that produced some components for Tornado comm systems. I still remember that shipments were marked "goods in aid of the Tornado", designating them as duty free.

I saw GR4s in Kandahar in 2014, I worked a night shift so sometimes we would see them taking off at night as we drove alongside the flightline, and the afterburners would lance out into the darkness. It was one of the coolest goddamn things I've ever seen.

I was an American soldier in Bosnia in the peace keeping mission. I never felt so warm and cozy and secure as when tornadoes and A10 warthog flew over head when we were on convoy road marches.

Swing wings are so cool, most of the time they are in this fantastic middle ground where they have all the capabilities, but not yet completely automated by computers and fly by wire.

Refreshing to see after so many slop or dubious looking channels kept getting suggested to my feed. Subscribed!

This video gets all three hype I can give for being completely human made

5:50 I mean, the Netherlands is a small country, we couldn’t have gone for bombers, attackers and fighters, that would be too expensive, so we chose a good multirole jet

The Gulf War Tornado pilots deserve so much more respect than they get. They had the most dangerous missions, flying low and slow over heavily defended runways to drop their cluster munitions. Dudes had balls of steel.

Thank you for singing my praises.

I was so happy when I heard the Italian crew that soloed a mission survived

I've seen Panavia Tornado exactly once in an airshow in 2001. It made everlasting impression that lives rent free in my head.

A German Bundesmarine variant flew along the runway, relatively close to the crowd. Slow speed, high angle of attack. Then it lit afterburners and speeded away. That violent, all permeating rumble... probably the closest my stomach has come to resonance cascade.

I grew up near RAF Leeming, to this day when a fast jet goes over (whereever I am) the instant thought is TORNADA! My Dad won a small contract in the 1980s to re-seed the side of the runway next to the 'New Control Tower' at 6 years old he made me bunk off school and take me onto the base in off his Bedford truck so that I could watch them. Stood at the side of the runway 100ft from Tornado's practicing their faststrike take-off using afterburn. Absolutely Epic core memory.

I remember being in Beja, Portugal during my service in the GAF when 6 or 8 Tornados went out afterburners roaring together. I remember my whole thorax being shaken

16:40 You got this part wrong, it's called CCRP, not CCIP. CCRP is where you feed the computer data about exactly where you want to drop a bomb before hand and it'll guide the crew on trajectory and tell them exactly when to release the weapons to hit a target. CCIP is where the computer calculates the current trajectory of the aircraft and the terrain to give the pilots a live "cross hair" of where the bomb would land if it was released at any given moment.

I recall reading years ago that the Tornados in Desert Storm returned from some missions with sand blasting - the ground following radars were detecting the underlying rock, not the dry sand dunes (archaeologists frequently use this to map features under sand dunes). Apparently some just skimmed over the top, but so far as we know, none were destroyed by this.
