Street Fighter finally enters the third dimension.

After years of dominating the fighting game genre with 2D sprites, Capcom and ARIKA took Street Fighter in a completely different direction with Street Fighter EX. Developed by ARIKA under Street Fighter II creator Akira “Nin-Nin” Nishitani, EX attempted something that seemed almost inevitable during the rise of the PlayStation: bringing Street Fighter into the world of polygonal 3D graphics.

But instead of simply following Virtua Fighter and Tekken, Street Fighter EX took a different approach—3D graphics with the foundation of a traditional 2D Street Fighter game.

In this retrospective, we explore the development of Street Fighter EX, ARIKA's philosophy behind translating the series into 3D, and how the game eventually evolved into Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha on the PlayStation. We'll break down its gameplay, Super Cancels, Guard Breaks, Expert Mode, massive collection of new fighters, critical reception, and whether Street Fighter's first major experiment with polygons actually worked.
