The Insane Lore of Street Fighter

It's the most iconic fighting game franchise of all time, but how many people can say they know what it's really about? Well, after my Tekken video did so well, I figured I would duplicate that treatment for the Street Fighter franchise! Why? Because I'm one of those weirdoes who plays these games for the story.

(Apologies if I get a few details here and there wrong, Street Fighter canon can be pretty hidden and cryptic)

One of Cody's taunts and win poses is him pulling the cuffs off to rub his wrists implying, he could take them off anytime but chooses to keep them on for an added challenge. Gotta love that guy.

Fun Fact: As stated in an interview, the reason Zangief is a "Bad Guy" in the Wreck-It Ralph movie, is because the director hates grapplers.
Appearently he would always lose to Zangief when playing SF2 in the arcades, and since then he has been hard-coded as a pure Villain in his mind.

It’s really funny how SF6’s world tour shows that Metro City just follows beat ‘em up logic even outside of an arcade game, the place and people are just like that

Interestingly I always thought that Ryu just had a credit card Ken gave him to use as needed. Probably can walk into any Master's owned hotel and say "I'll take the presidential suite" and it's all taken care of with a specific note for the hotel management "If some giant Asian guy in a white Gi named Ryu comes in, he is a VIP at Ken Master's personal request."

Karin's anime archetype is "The Ojou": the upper-class/rich girl. They tend to be haughty, have tsundere tendencies, and invariably have a hidden heart of gold, deep down.

The maniacal laugh is colloquially referred to as the "Noblewoman's laugh".

Just a bit of a correction, if Ken and Guile's respective wives are sisters, that makes them brothers in law, not step brothers

In this near 3 hour video covering 30+ years of lore, the biggest eye-opener for me was GUILE’S FIRST NAME IS WILLIAM?!

Gotta give it to bison, he didn’t die like other fighter game villains by screaming noooooooo, dude went out with a laugh. That’s hardcore.

When you think about it, the story of Street Fighter 2 is kinda like a lot of movies during the Cold War period that waned American and Russia to "just stop fighting and bring world peace." In SF2's case is was basically having the strongest powers and countries come together and beat up the most evil man ever.
Imagine if Rocky 4 was actually the story of Rocky and Ivan Drago teaming up to defeat Satan.

Fun fact about Gill: The main reason he is split down the middle with red and blue is because Capcom were tired of people making fun of characters' sprites, particularly Sagat's, only flipping depending on which way they were facing. So they flexed on the haters and created a character who has 2x the amount of sprites a normal character would have to face both directions.

About the skulls on Dalshim.
He says they were the skulls of children dead of illness and famish in the second volume of Street Fighter 2 the comics, during his fight against Ryu.
During said fight, he has Ryu cornered, but keep hearing the supplication of the spirits of the children, which allows Ryu to do à sho-Ryu-ken
Said attacks shatters the skulls qave Dalhsim, as at this point the shoryuken was a death sentence. Dalhsim consider himself foolish to have entered the fight as it was not virtuous, and believes that beating up good people for money is not what they would have wanted.

I love how when Ken proposes and Eliza says yes, it suddenly says "GAME OVER".

As someone who is divorced, that hits harder than any street fighter move would lol.

"The longest win quotes of any fighting game character i've ever seen"

you would absolutely love (or hate) Xrd Bedman

“Remember 2 hours ago?…” is wild

Fun Fact: Dhalsims fire is only but an illusion as stated by one of his win quotes. His mental powers are kinda crazy

@Web_Slade 1 year ago (edited)

fun fact: Rose is based off of Lisa-Lisa from Jojo, with the scarf, Hamon (replaced by soul power which is also life energy) and the overall look.
edit: italy i guess too.

20:13 "only trust your fists. police will never help you"

astronomically based

Capcom should pay you for bringing everyone up to date on the lore

1:03:14 - that, my friend, is the ojousama trope. The signature “ohoho!” laugh that accompanies it involves a hand out over the mouth because back in the older days, when class and social status defined everything, a high class woman’s laugh was deemed too pure to be witnessed by public commoners.

Nowadays, the ojousama (madam, girl/woman of high social status/class) is used to describe a snooty rich girl with an inflated ego, and the laugh is the cherry on top of the sundae that is this character trope.

Fun Fact: a further connection of G and Q is that G's moveset in SF5 has a lot of Q's move animations in SF3, but seemingly more complete/coherent and with his power of the earth effect.
