Welcome back to My Sewing Diaries! 🧵💕

There have been a few new additions to my sewing stash, so today I’m sharing 10gorgeous new fabrics AND 2 new sewing patterns — all with my Autumn/Winter wardrobe plans in mind.

I’ve been trying to make my fabric purchases work with the colours, garments and outfit combinations I already have planned for the season, so these aren’t just pretty fabrics… they all have a purpose!

There are some lovely textures, prints and colours in this haul, and I’m really excited to see how they work alongside the pieces I’ve already made and the projects I have planned.

Hi Alison, a tip for the Waxed Cotton is about a week before you are cutting out is to hang it, I hang it over the top bannister on the landing, gravity and the warmth in the house helps with the fold creases as it can not be ironed, also get a good seam roller if you have not got one, I have stainless steel ones of different sizes, depending on the garment and what you are making, after you have sewn what ever you will be sewing, the teeth of the feed dogs may need to be cleaned as the wax can collect in the groves, I have a small baby toothbrush for mine. Good luck. I am sure what ever you make will be fab.

You sew much more than I do now and I always enjoy seeing your videos pop up. Being retired and home most days, I don’t have the need for many new things. I live in shorts and T’s in the summer and sweats or jeans in winter. You have picked up some beautiful fabric!

Hey Alison, dont take an iron to the wax cotton ot it melts thr wax, so a weighted seam roller is your best friend. Also having a cloth beside you to wipe wax off your tools between uses is helpful. I did iron over mine when I made a bag and it did mark it although I got away with it as it just looked a bit more worn in. Also a Teflon foot may help and some baking paper for the layers 😊

Some lovely fabrics from the sale. I saw something I wanted, hesitated and it was gone!!! I really like Ready to Sew patterns and that top looks lovely. I am just finishing the French Navy Portmanteau jacket that I made in a quilted fabric. It is lovely but has been quite difficult what with pattern matching, not really having enough fabric and all the bulky seams but now the worst of it is done I am coming round to really likeing it when before I thought I might not finish it. I'm going to make something simpler next, a blouse or something!

Lovely fabrics and colours, I think those are the in colours at the moment. I definitely think having a colour palette in mind and a few plains really helps. I'm having a clear out of old makes and fabrics I no longer like and wondering why I bought and made such random stuff 😂

My A0 patterns arrived yesterday, so will be getting fabrics washed and doing some batch cutting…Happy Sewing 🪡🧵

Hi Alison. I've made a waxed jacket for both my husband and myself.I suggest you cut it out on the single layer. When pinning, pin within the seam allowance. I normally use a denim needle which is a bit stronger and flatten out the seams with a Hera marker or one of those rolly things.
A great fabric choice. I love the burgundy. I'll watch the video again to find where you bought it. Fbulous other fabrics, too.I think I need some of that paprika linen! Probably Oxbows or Saguaros for me, depending on what the drape is like when the fabric arrives.

Gorgeous fabrics Alison. I have got few from Varety too. Would like to have a go at making a jacket, never tried one. Summer was trying to make dresses, tried making couple of pants. This season would like to make jacket. Who knows may be an ambitious plan.

love the fabrics and your inspo board. Failing at not buying fabric, and have some sale fabrics coming from Sanskruti and a couple from rainbow. Currently trying out the bramble blouse. With the collar it takes more fabric than I usually buy for making shirts, so needed some longer lengths.

Hi Alison, I've sewn with ghe waxed canvas quite a few times but it was for making bags. If I was you I'd open it up and let it hang over a door or roll it rather than leaving it folded. It's nice to sew but if you have to unpick then it can leave visible holes. I can't comment on sewing on a domestic because for my bags I always use my industrial but I'm sure it'll be fine. What about doing the jacket collar in a cord as it would feel better against your skin!

Rainbow always worth a look I find. I bought from them at Stitch and then on line: fabulous striped denim for Madrone pants. Oiled cotton, well, you will have the right machine and clips. I used the tape on a recent make but it came off. There was a person who made a fabulous oil cloth M+M Denham jacket on FB last year. I'm not on there anymore so can't check. Came from Cornwall. Not much help really!

Hy Alison’s I’ve just made a wool skirt and the waistband is far too thick it looks ridiculous it has to have a zip so çant make it elasticated so any ideas ? 🤷🤷🤷
