I’m amazed he’s cutting opal dry with SiC, but you can’t argue with success! Aussies are the best. You should interview Tim from Tim’s Adventures next! Another great interview, your work is appreciated! Listening to these characters really helps make up for the lack of club meetings during this blasted pandemic.

I had a funny moment while watching, I was in the middle of polishing a nightmare ring repair and it wasn’t behaving and I hear “ It’s so easy to polish gold” had me cracking up! I’ve only just started to add some gem cutting to my skill base so I’m yet to experience gem polishing nightmares but trust me as a jeweller that polishing gold or platinum can be hellish at times.

Scott is a legend in Australia, really happy to see him interviewed. He’s well respected for his skills and as a generally good guy 👍.

A lot of the Qld gemfields Sapphire has for a long time been cut locally. The area is getting worked out.

The Type metal polishing laps commonly used in Australia are an alloy Lead 82% Antimony 15% Tin 3% although percentages may vary. The antimony seems to harden the alloy. With use the surface, specially polishing sapphires , does seem to crystalise thus needing a shave every couple of years. A prepolish with 14000 on a ceramic lap followed by 100000 on the type metal works very well for me for most gem materials.
