"Rock the Casbah" by The Clash is about defying authoritarian bans on Western music, inspired by the 1979 Iranian Revolution where rock and disco were prohibited. The song tells a fictional story of a Middle Eastern king trying to enforce the ban, but his people and even his own air force pilots rebel by secretly listening to and "rocking the casbah" (a term for a marketplace/fortified area) with rock music. It's a song about rebellion, freedom, and the irresistible power of music against fanaticism, written by Joe Strummer after learning about people being punished for owning disco records in Iran

This song couldn't be more appropriate than this week in Iran. FREEDOM!!!!!

I was deployed to Prince Sultan Air Base Saudi Arabia in 1997

We got briefed that we could not play this song.

Of course, we played it all day, every day

“London Calling,” is the song you need.

This was 1982.  We were recovering from a gas shortage and oil was everywhere in the Middle East.

"SHOULD  STAY OR SHOULD I GO?" IS A BANGER!!!😎👍

The Clash have been pumping out punk protest songs since the 70s. London Calling is a great one of many!  "The only band that matters"❤

The Clash were part of the UK Punk explosion of the mid 70s, but they started exploring many other styles of music including reggae, soul, rockabilly, etc. THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS!

Magnificent Seven captured the amped up, scary vibe of early 1980s NYC.

In addition to telling a story about forbidden music, this song came out just a few years after the second oil crisis of the 70s. I can remember as a kid seeing cars lined up down the block to get gas, and your license plate determined what day you were allowed to purchase gas (at least in California at that time). So the video visuals were pretty topical for the time.

I was playing this record once, and my mother (who was born in 1917) was dusting. "Ooh, I like this song! Who does this?" she said. "Uh, mom...that's The Clash."

I think it was loosely based on the ban of western music in Iran, but don’t hold me to that! The armadillo was definitely a Texas thing, the video was shot in Austin. Great reaction! ❤️‍🔥✌🏻🫶🏻

True story the Clash did this because at that time it was the gulf war. The U.S. soldiers used to blast that song over the hillside very loud to make the Iranian soldiers really pissed off. The Clash history on many different levels. Superb band like the Beatles !

I listened to the original on radio when it was first released!!  You can't really try to "judge" any song, especially if you weren't there in that generation.  Love to all!

The song is 44yrs old,1982 it came out, the sheik who was blown up recently was put into power, and banned “western” culture, the Clash found out and wrote the song
It is still extremely relevant
The lead singer lived in the Middle East as a child
The Middle East was very westernized until this sheik took over

The song is about rebelling against the Iranian government's ban on music and dancing after the Shah was dethroned. It is about freedom of artistic expression

They played this a lot when I lived in Kuwait.

Guns of Brixton😎🤘

Punk rockers , Metalheads and Rockers in general all the way back to Blues singers have spoken out against evil and perceived evil in a way that the average person can digest it. Now with the internet we're being barraged with real and fake news daily with no sound track to ease the pain of it or to help focus the anger of it...

The Clash Signature Song is
“London Calling”
