Reminder that children themselves are a marginalized groups and once they grow up they no longer have to live under the confines of their parents, and for whatever reason they wonder why that may or may not be.

"I never asked to be born" used to be a cliche for a dramatic teenager having an argument, now it is a direct rebuke to the generations who collectively bear the responsibility for putting them into a life in which they have made things infinitely materially worse for them, and still blame them anyway. These people downplay trauma or abuse or the fact that most have resigned themselves to spend all the wealth they've accumulated on themselves and themselves alone until they die, this is statically the case. Boomers have lived in this world that was cater made for them their entire lives and have manufactured a just-world delusion that demands they be heard and listened to and obeyed until they're dead. It's obscene.

My partner’s parents are this way. They are far-right, deeply religious conservative who refuse to take any responsibility for their actions.

Providing for your children is the bare minimum for being a parent, and yet some parents act like because they took care of their kids basic needs, they then can treat them however they want.

Relationships of any kind are built of mutual respect, and it is insane to think that anyone should be forced into maintaining a relationship with anyone else.

God forbid any of these people go to therapy and do some introspection into why their family is cutting them off.

Grandparents rights are a thing in some American states, but it is usually only possible in cases of a strong existing relationship with the grandchildren and the death, divorce, or lost custody by one of the parents.

It is insidious projection to call children who cut family out of their life "self-centred". My mother made me street homeless while I suffered from seizures and I didn't cut her off until a few years ago. There was always some reason I would let guilt trip me. But for every new line in the sand, she'd find a way to cross it. Eventually I said to myself that whatever the consequence is, it's not worse than this.

Anyone else seeing the similarity between the boomers trying to exert legal control where they have zero moral justification right to do against their adult kids and men trying to exert legal control where they have zero moral justification to do so against women's bodies and activites.

In the usa, there are a lot of people going No Contact or Low Contact. Boomers have a culture of No Accountability…. and that crosses ethnicities. There’s a lot of “you should respect your elders, just because”. Then they do or say toxic and hurtful things, and wonder why no one gives them lots of attention! They are perpetual adolescents

The concept of grandparents being able to sue for visitation has always made my eyes roll into the back of my head.
