It's astounding how you don't hear the difference between Apfel and Äpfel. Just goes to show how subjective the hearing process is and how much depends on what your brain already knows and recognises or not. Thank you for this very entertaining video!

a is like art, ä is like bang (bäng)
o is like bone, ö is like circle (cörcle)
u is like cool (cul), ü is like hymn (hümn)

Ryan - As a native English speaker who learned German for 7 years at school, we were taught to think of the umlaut as adding an e to help with pronunciation. For example schoen for schön. Worked for me
