Thank you smart Chappell roan

You look like an absolute badass, and then you open your mouth and suddenly all I hear are angels. Wow! is your voice something(●'◡'●)

Thanks very much for posting! One comparison you drew which was especially useful for me: the amount of breath needed to Sing is the same amount for vocal fry, and not more. I hadn't heard that before.

Singers, even if not planning to sing classical,  should be listening to the recordings of Lilli Lehmann, Emmy Destinn and Rosa Ponselle.

5.02 is when she starts singing the scale.

Picturing an inhaler while singing is the most helpful visual I have ever had for support. Way too much emphasis on "moving the air" in my past lessons I think.

I didn't understand how to do the great scale when I was reading the book, so thank you for explaining!

The REAL Lili Lehmann's scale is this :
12345  (breath) 5678 (breath)   8765(breath)54321 /
do ré mi fa sol (breath) sol la si do, then, going down : do si la sol (breath) sol fa mi ré do
You stop on the dominant
And not on the 4th note!

I sing this very quietly too just to see that I can sing a range of dynamics, whilst controlling my lower abdomen to support things.

Omg I just tried doing it a couple times and already I have improved in tone, just by making slight adjustments each time! I feel like I have a better understanding overall of how breath support works, thanks so much for this! Also, I bought Lilli Lehmann's book for my own study ❤

This Whole Series by Lilly Lehmann has been absolutely fantastic & I am wondering if you will take a deep dive into her whole philosophy about Breath & how she uses the correct sensations for better breath control. Once again really appreciate you doing this.❤‍🔥❤‍🔥

3:02 foe future reference

Do you have a video on hitting high notes without the throat tightening up and straining? I don't know if I simply need practice or if I'm just trying to go higher than my range can go

so many greats points in this video, all of which have helped me immensely. not pushing breath further than you can fry, letting breath support lift you with the scale, the silent y's connecting each note. i feel so much better after just a 10 minute video 😭❤️ thank you!!

The emphasis on using less breath is a GAME CHANGER for me! I kept feeling like my breath support was such garbage because i have issues with even my speaking voice where i speak without breathing enough or pausing to breathe and i ended up having to go to speech therapy for it. it never really felt like it helped but it made me form a bad habit where i overthink my breathing while speaking and singing so much that i get super insecure and worry every time whether a sound will even come out, let alone be in my control well. i accidentally tighten everything. this problem pre-speech therapy was so so so much less intense and I am sad that it got into my 17 year old brain so much.

I used to sing a tonnnnn like 15 years ago now, but unfortunately I had some difficult times that eventually led to me losing so much confidence and feeling very out of control and unfamiliar with my own singing voice, something I never imagined i would ever feel and I think it was even kind of identity shaking for me. Ever since I was a young child I was in multiple choirs, private lessons since 3rd grade, I was in a childrens show choir and a local childrens choir, at one point 3 choirs a day at school, musical theater around 4 shows a year, choir/musicals in high school and college and even have been in an opera in college (though i often was in comedic roles in musicals and opera class because i did better at those, since i was less worried about voice cracks and would just make in into part of my character if possible). I used to be really a lot more confident in my voice and was so much more free and emotionally connected with it, but when i was 17 i got whooping cough and coughed violently for a year, and i was still in choir and singing a ton and didn't really know how to preserve my voice through all of that in spite of trying to get advice. i developed nodes on my vocal chords but still had to sing through it in a musical and in choirs, my voice teacher had taught me for like 4 years then, so she noticed that i was altering my technique and singing more in my head voice to compensate for the way my voice was raw, fragile and scratchy, and she said she could hear my speaking voice had changed almost like a raspy smokers voice. it was honestly so devastating and difficult for me emotionally.

i tried my best to use the techniques i knew and feel for them in my body to self check, but i think some things i was believing i was doing alright in, i was making worse and forming bad habits by tensing and overthinking on them while not really feeling it in the right way in my body to use the advice correctly. I kept getting so frustrated because I would feel like I was on the verge of losing my voice like once a month (and actually would lose my voice so that I couldn't even talk way too often). I was especially frustrated with breath support, it was never the same and became so difficult. I really wasn't used to that because I was on swim team and had always sang and suddenly I needed an inhaler for sports asthma. Then it was even worse once I got covid twice. and worse when I had lost someone I loved and was in grieving and I barely spoke, and went through a depression where suddenly I quit choir and voice lessons and didn't sing for a long time, and even when I did, it was frustrating and emotional.

Even trying my best with breath support, taking big breaths i would run out after like a short phrase, but I was hurting my voice by overcompensating and taking bigger breaths as if i was about to be swimming and it felt like holding my breath hoping id make it through phrases, and that would make me so insecure and my throat so much tighter and I really have been trying to figure out where i was going wrong with my breath.  i barely sang at all for around 5 years straight and felt shame and regret a lot when i did, but then I slowly started trying to heal emotionally and physically and part of that was really deliberately making effort to rediscover my singing voice. now at 36, even if it can't be what it was or i don't have the same confidence or skill, I want to enjoy loving that side of me again and never let it go again. I miss it too much. I started singing in my car, doing warm ups, then even doing karaoke with friends where i am slowly slowly gaining confidence again, but I desperately need to actually learn (or relearn) correct technique. My throat is still sore all the time and my ear nose and throat doctor doesn't have advice for why, but I have carefully been learning how to have healthier singing (and speaking) technique and I think it has been gradually helping, or at least helping me find more joy in expression through singing again. I think I never had good technique for pop singing and barely understood how to use my chest voice or belt healthily, but with that misplaced confidence and fun of a teen I used to just go for it anyway so I'm sure I did damage with that too, and this time I want to really try to get fundamentals down again...it's pretty hit and miss tbh, but I know I'm my hardest critic partially because I can feel it when it is too strained...but I know am capable of sounding excellent here and there lol, even now after everything. so now I really want to learn technique so that I am less afraid of injuring myself more or again, and can be more comfortable with my control.

I have been loving your videos and explanations. they give me a lot to think about and in new ways. the tip about using the amount of breath for a vocal fry really helped click something for me with my breath support. I think because I have had teachers say that I need more breath support because of my history with my issues with my throat, I was feeling like that meant I needed to use more breath. so I felt like I was practically gulping down air and then using it all in great huffs. it was exhausting and made me so stressed about making  it through phrases and made it feel like I was always pushing out notes too much and using too much air, almost like I was making myself like hyperventilate and then the stress would go right back to my throat as I tried to squeeze the last words of a phrase out. I knew it was all wrong and a mental block sort of issue/insecurity but I couldn't figure out how to correct it.  thinking of the small fry, using less breath, but not less sound, it has felt more smooth and easy following your warm ups and videos than singing has felt for me most of the time for some very rough years now! I am so excited to follow more of your videos and (carefully) keep trying to get a little bit of my easy voice and confidence back! breath has been one of the main issues, even in speaking, so I loved feeling how these exercises feel when I trusted that I already had enough air, and didn't need to force it out and was in fact running through it way too much by the way I was bellowing lol and basically holding my voice while singing. thank you for your videos, I will keep healing and trying and enjoy my voice as much as i can again. <3 (whew sorry for such a long comment, I just wanted to explain my context and why it means so much to me to figure out a healthy technique to be able to sing comfortably again).

thanks again! and anyone learning out there, keep going! and don't forget to keep fostering your love for music and your voice, paying attention to your vocal health and techniques, it really someday can get very difficult because life throws all sorts of things at us humans, and good fundamentals can be the anchor you need. singing is such a soulful, personal, precious gift for expression and feeling and I hope that you find your favorite version of your voice safely, comfortably, and confidently so that you can feel free and happy to sing for the rest of your life whenever you want to!

You are a breath of fresh air. Thank you for telling about the Opera lady's book. I dont know if you teach private lessons, but your technique resonates with me.

Thank You for sharing about Lilli in previous video I now have the book and haven't yet gotten to the great scale pg. 96 however I am a bass baritone and in head voice was able to follow you in your scale with good tone and not over power in resonance.  Thank You for your excellent instruction ❤

I always love watching your videos thank you so much for creating them and sharing your talent

Love your lessons and how you connect them with old-school artists like Lilli Lehman ❤ Good technique is always in.

This is such a great series of videos
