Pretty sure we’re only a few layers of capitalism away from the pastors quitting the whole act and just straight up going “but before we continue this service let’s take a second to pray for todays sponsor, war thunder”
There used to be a church in my community that ran a food bank, a thrift store, afterschool STEM workshops for kids, and more. Then the building got bought out by a megachurch, and they shut down all of those programs immediately. Really makes ya think.
"We know that a Mr Beast megachurch would look like this."
LAST TO LEAVE THE CIRCLE GETS ETERNAL SALVATION! $50,000 to the last person to be tempted by Satan into walking out the front door! How many communion wafers can YOU fit in YOUR mouth?
This is so ironic seeing as the Bible says not to buy extravagant things or be greedy but rather give money back to the people who truly need it. Like having a roller coaster and a private jet as a pastor is so against the Bible, Jesus would not support you spending money on material things and not using that money to help those in need.
This is the most "I didn't read the Bible" behavior, holy late stage capitalism, Batman! Jesus very explicitly expressed disdain for buying and selling in the church, not to mention the deadly sin of greed? If "lost the plot" was a genre
Back when I still religious (Catholic), some of my mom’s friends invited me to their evangelical megachurch and of course to be polite our mother forced us all to go. A normal Catholic mass rarely goes over one hour, and is very regimented, with a lot of solemn ritual and passive listening to the scriptures. These lunatics went two hours straight, and it was all lazer lights shows, acrobats, electric violins, smoke machines, live feeds, and the pastor slamming us with inspiration porn in between requests for donations. When it finally ended my mom’s friends smiled at us like they had just taken us to Coachella and were like “did you have fun?”
And I’m like “you really go through that shit EVERY Sunday? No wonder your brain is melted butter.”
A tank squashing a load of cars in front of/underneath a pyrotechnics show in what is allegedly a church is the most obnoxiously american thing I have ever seen. I was surprised at the lack of bald eagles
Daughter of a mega church pastor here, the idea that pastors are just buying things they want and lazily writing them into sermons or "for ministry" is actually SUPER common. The lead pastor of the AG church my dad worked at used to infamously have the church pay for family vacations and other personal trips by selling them to the board as "mission trips" His wife would spend hundreds, even thousands to go across the globe on "missions" she'd come home and tell stories about how all she did was hang out with friends for two weeks. And don't even get me started on the amount of money my childhood youth pastor must have spent on half-baked, poorly integrated metaphors.
