It was so haunting how Nicki had to prove how much she loved her abusive partner while the other version was stuck as a prisoner watching herself go insane. That was such a scarily relatable way to put the experience

He didnt even say "i want nikki to love me as much as i love nikki." He said he wanted nikki to love him more than anyone in the fucking world...

Every time someone says the actual meaning of “trauma bond” out loud a fairy gets its wings

thank you thank you thank youuuu for bringing up reactive abuse, because i walked away from this movie and immediately thought "wow it feels so rare to see a movie depict reactive abuse just in general, let alone so raw and real" and its been driving me crazy that i've yet to see anybody acknowledge that angle

As a queer transmasc, Obsession freaked me out. I live in constant fear of men stripping away my autonomy and consent, and the fact that Bear did that to someone he claimed to love is so terrifying. I see myself in Nikki, not because I act like her, but because I can see myself becoming a victim like her. Stay safe out there, folks. It’s a scary time to be visibly queer

I resonated with this soooo bad. Sometimes you are with someone who will make you forget who you are. And when you find yourself again you are like “where tf do I go from here”. Love you Bittnia. Felt this message in my soull

It’s insane people joking about how they’re just like Nikki and how it’s so cute/quirky. When I related to her character the scenes were genuinely triggering. It’s not fun to be in her position, she’s not some toxic gf, she lost her autonomy while being attached to the person hurting her.

i am not gay people in phone. I am gay people in laptop. don't get twisted i'm tryna see.

When faced with the idea that he was taking advantage of Nikki, bear‘s response was that she’s the one that won’t leave him alone… I don’t know how many times I’ve seen this happen in real life. those who know know

I immediately recognized the theme of “reactive abuse”. I wish we had a different word for that as it’s so misleading. I was so triggered by Bear as he was so similar to my emotionally and sexually abusive ex bf. He was never actively violent, so passive on the surface but was so deeply manipulative and coercive. Not out of malice, but pure selfishness and narcissism. He actually made me go insane, I felt like two different people existed in me, a person where his “true love” was a reality, vs a person that was SA’d and gaslit into thinking it never occurred, freaking tf out. My mood became so unstable he would say HE was scared of ME. Now that I’ve escaped him I’ve been completely fine, I’ve never behaved that way w anyone before nor since, interesting how that works.

Obsession comes from loneliness that is especially present in queer relationships where abandonment is unfortunately very familiar to us. Romance is seen as the most possessive and valuable form of love that looks filling when you're starved for it. I can relate to the idea of wanting someone to want me enough to cover for all the times I've felt unwanted, but wanting love is not the same as being in love. When you want to be obsessed over, you're obsessing over others.

Just imagine this: if Nikki's character had been given an existing boyfriend that gets screwed over by this whole thing, male audiences would have been so much more sympathetic

I’m OBSESSED with this movie as a fellow lesbian. I broke down sobbing during the scene where Nikki was begging for his forgiveness and saying she’ll be whatever he wants. Walked out that amc dissociating hard as fuck hyperventilating too. Had to sit on the curb and hit my pen for a bit😭

i read that the actors have confirmed Nikkis feelings for Bear are purposely ambiguous.

they spliced together takes of nikki reacting different ways to bear especially in the "do you like me?" scene (positively/negatively) so sometimes she seems to be testing waters with her questions and other times she firmly seems not to like him

also i listened to someone elses analysis talk about how we see bears selfishness in how he reacts to sandys death in the very beginning of the movie - his reaction to finding her dead is essentially scolding the cat when cats cant open child proof bottles so he would have needed to leave the bottle both open and in her reach

14:42 it’s so annoying and sad how most people just aren’t getting the point of the movie and the fact that the crazy obsessed “Nikki” WASNT Nikki when the movie and actual Nikki herself literally tell the audience that

I'm so glad you brought up the BPD angle when it comes to Obsession. I have the diagnosis, and though I don't present in the outward and aggressive way that is seen as typical, I watched Nikki and saw exactly what goes on in my head that I work so hard not to show to the world.

The silver lining I see as someone who has been in a very similar queer relationship is: Nikki saved herself at the end of the movie. Even in possessed form she made the wish for Bear to love her as much as she does RIGHT at the last possible moment for her to be saved. She forced him to discard himself and stop from puking up the pills to focus on her just as she had been discarding herself to focus on him. And that’s what lead to his death and freed her from the curse

he didnt love her, he was obsessed with her, and he made her obsessed with him

bear gave me the big ickies. Because I’ve essentially known him irl… it kinda was traumatic to watch the movie. I think maybe a lot of us have come into contact with a bear at some point in our life.
