A major fire broke out Saturday evening in Euskirchen: A building and warehouse complex of approximately 2,500 square meters on Roitzheimer Straße was engulfed in flames. Around 200 firefighters, supported by volunteers from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), the ambulance service, and the police, battled the blaze for hours. Despite their efforts, they could not prevent the building from being completely destroyed. The storage areas and offices were used by various tenants. For example, 20 to 30 caravans and motorhomes were stored there over the winter, the Euskirchen food bank used some of the premises, and a software company and a photo studio were also located there. Vehicles and floats belonging to a carnival association were also stored there.

The fire produced a massive amount of smoke. Strong winds repeatedly fanned the flames and caused a large number of sparks to fly. As a precaution, around 70 residents of the adjacent apartment buildings had to leave their homes. Most of them found temporary accommodation with relatives and friends overnight or were temporarily housed in a nearby nursing home.

The fire was brought under control shortly after 3 a.m. However, mop-up operations continued into the morning. Police are investigating the cause of the fire. Fire investigators will likely only be able to examine the scene more closely once it has cooled down. Police have estimated the property damage at a high six-figure sum.
