[GAGGENAU] – Gigantic inferno in Gaggenau-Michelbach: Residential building with carpentry workshop and warehouse engulfed in flames – flames several meters high, thick plume of smoke – 25 residents evacuated as a precaution – extreme heat and persistent humidity – brewery brings beverage truck to the scene and serves cold drinks to the emergency responders – over 100 personnel from the fire department, ambulance service, and Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) on a major operation for hours

A gigantic inferno raged through a residential area in Gaggenau-Michelbach in the Rastatt district during the night. Numerous residents were evacuated as a precaution. The fire threatened to spread to other buildings. The persistent summer heat and the extreme heat radiation from the flames also demanded everything from the firefighters for hours.

Around 8:10 p.m., the emergency services received a report of a fire in a former wood processing plant with an attached residential building. Within a very short time, a major operation developed.

For reasons still unknown, a residential and commercial building with an attached carpentry workshop and warehouse was engulfed in flames at around 8:15 p.m. "When the fire department arrived, the fire had already spread rapidly, and all three buildings were ablaze," explained the fire department spokesperson.

"We alerted every fire department resource we could," he continued. The persistent temperatures, well over 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), demanded everything from the emergency responders. "The intense heat and the continued high temperatures, even into the night, made firefighting extremely strenuous. Numerous firefighters wearing breathing apparatus had to be deployed."

The fire department initially focused on bringing the fire under control and preventing the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings. To relieve the firefighters, the German Red Cross continuously supplied them with drinking water. A local brewery provided a surprise during the night: Recognizing the seriousness of the situation immediately, they quickly positioned their beverage truck at the scene of the fire. This allowed non-alcoholic cold drinks to be dispensed, providing refreshments for the emergency responders in the 28-degree nighttime temperatures.

Furthermore, firefighters not directly involved in the danger zone were able to wear lighter protective clothing, explained the fire department spokesperson.

Around 25 residents from the houses that had been evacuated as a precaution were evacuated, according to the police. The city set up a shelter for them in the Wiesentalhalle.

According to initial reports, no one was injured in the fire. Due to the lengthy mop-up operations, the fire department, rescue services, and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) remained on scene well into the night.
