At 2:36 p.m., several callers reported smoke and flames coming from the roof of a boathouse in Cologne-Sürth via emergency call. The first ambulance on the scene treated four people who had managed to escape from the mooring boat on their own. All were unharmed. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze and secured a nearby gas tank. A fire department rescue boat and a water police boat were deployed to provide cover from the Rhine.
A drone from the Cologne Fire Department assisted firefighters in locating hotspots and hotspots from the air. Due to the current low water level in the Rhine, firefighting from the water was not possible. However, firefighters were able to reach the burning building on foot. By 3:38 p.m., the fire was under control. The subsequent mop-up operations proved difficult, as parts of the roof had to be removed to completely extinguish all remaining embers. The operation is still ongoing.
A total of approximately 100 emergency personnel from the professional fire department, volunteer fire department, and ambulance service were deployed, using 22 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and two long-duration SCBA.
