As someone who works as a graphic designer for film and has been the person designing what goes on a chalkboard (which is almost always done without ANY input from writers due to lack of time in the filming schedule), thank you for your attention to a graphic that undoubtably started as nothing more than a throwaway idea ("and there'll be a history lesson on the chalkboard") but was very clearly created by a designer who DID. THEIR. RESEARCH. and for that, I applaud them, and you. Great work!

Theory: black is the house color for the governor of Munchkinland. It would certainly stand out as different in color-saturated Munchkinland, black is somewhat difficult to achieve with natural dyes as, much like green, it requires overdyeing and is thus expensive, and Elphaba choosing it is a reflection of her status as the eldest and heir to her family's title, whether her father likes it or not.

The talent of a youtube creator can be rated by their ability to make me watch hourslong videos about franchises I have little experience with and less than no interest in, and feel that it was time well spent.

“MOGA, Make Oz Green Again” - get Bernadette her Oscar

This is the type of video that will be shared in the Wicked film costuming and prop department(s) group chat

Along these lines, Glinda not wearing green makes sense per the propoganda machine. She’s supposed to be the Wizard’s ally, not his subordinate. Fiyero fills the role of powerful subordinate—the prince of a subject nation accepting the rule of his superior—and thus gets the emerald uniform. Glinda is presented as someone just as powerful as the Wizard who still recognizes his superiority without question. She needs to stand out to make the Wizard unquestionable.

honestly, the idea that Madam Morrible is ACTVELY HELPING THE WIZARD KEEP THE DROUGHT AWAY actually makes a LOT of sense, considering the info of the great impassible desert, the vast fields of agriculture, and we SAW HER literally generate a thunderstorm and a tornado

Random idea but what if the Gillikin/Ozzian dialect is actually just a bastardization of words that were introduced to Ozz by the wizard, and the reason their usage is so odd is because the wizard just uses as many fancy sounding words as he can while not fully understanding their correct usage himself? Like it's just everyone trying to sound fancy by using wizard words and no one can correct them because no one actually fully understands what they're supposed to mean or how the grammar is supposed to work.

I love that a “brief history” turns out to be possibly the longest video you’ve ever done. So real for that

So, “tradmunchkin” is not a term I ever expected to hear…

1:20:07 This is a real actual life style of typewriter that was in use in our world. It‘s called the AEG mignon. You use the wand to point at the letter you want, which turns the type barrel to the appropriate letter. When you press the button, it pushes the type barrel onto the color ribbon and down on the paper.
The type barrel can be switched out, so it was possible to have one typewriter using different fonts and especially different alphabets.
I own one, it‘s super nifty. I geeked out quite hard when seeing it in the movie.

As a film student can I just say I hope you know you are making some members of the art department for that film so happy that all the tiny details that go into designing a huge production like these movies are getting noticed and appreciated at this level

Just a thought I had during the "green dye" section at 1:10:10 : the dyes made from tulips are only made from the petals of the flowers, which leaves the stems and leaves as a waste byproduct of the manufacturing process. If the petals are so pigmented, it stands to reason that the rest of the flower would be as well, so perhaps the reason why they don't grow green tulips and are capable of creating such a large quantity of green dye is because they don't need to? They can just use the stems and leaves of the tulips for green dye.

Another thing worth noting are that pastel colored clothing is harder to maintain, as it will show stains and wear more easily than dark colors. Another indicator of wealth.

Kudos to Bernadette. This is satire on multiple levels. From satirizing long form video journalism to satirizing of historical scholarship to satirizing your own historical costume expertise. We haven’t even gotten to the layers of which Oz is the original source and deciding the film is 😮. Love it. You have surpassed yourself.

Production Team: Let's make everyone in the Emerald City wear green so that Glinda and Elphaba really stand out in their pink and black outfits.
Bernadette: Are there sartorial laws in this city? Just how powerful is the propaganda machine?
I love the insane amount of in-universe explanation Bernadette invents for costuming choices that were 100% based on making the main characters easy to distinguish in a crowd scene (also applies to the Shiz students other than the leads all wearing similar uniforms).

45:50 my costuming teacher always talks about the costumes in the broadway production of wicked as the standard of costuming, especially the emerald city. all she said was that “the slanting lines help convey a sense of unease”, not “actually these people had to spend double the time just to make a small detail almost no one will notice” and to be honest that’s the most theater costuming thing I’ve ever heard
