Sony Pictures Animation's GOAT film. The quintessential animal basketball movie. And when I first heard about this movie, I was not impressed. Sounding like a lame pun and a run-of-the-mill sports movie, I figured this project was an easy buck, with a nice art style. But it turns out, the current best animation studio... continues to make the current best animated movies. It IS a sports movie. But with a few changes in places. It ends how you expect.. but gets there a little differently. And it could be wrong to do anything less than gush about it. So here is our breakdown of Sony's Not-TERRIBLE GOAT Movie...

Is is just me or did no one talk about the movie

I LOVE how powerful and MUSCULAR Jett is and I find the subversion of the girlboss trope actually interesting. No one liked Jett for being so arrogant and not being a team player because of how badly she needs the validation and the movie actually takes that arc seriously rather than just humiliating her and making fun of her. That final game where she played even though her leg was destroyed and would be permanently damaged if she used it again had more of an impact one me than expected. And Will actually earned his rep, he's not just miraculously a good matchup against everyone, he needs the team as much as they need him. The only character I didn't really like was the bird, I wish she had more moments of her beating her fear.

Animation of this movie really stands out from other animal movies. It is fascinating how they animated paws and hooves so them grabbing basketball does not look weird enough to throw you out of immersion. Switching from human to specific animal behaviour too.

After watching this movie, Zootropolis/Zootopia enviroment felt cold and unnatural to me.
Like it's so clean, organized and segragated it feels odd.
Compared to this movie which has such juicy enviroment and feels like its populated with different people, with graffiti and some messiness.

Personally, one of my favorite things about this movie is the fact that Jett, who is the awesome female basketballer who doesn't have the, "she has a bust and looks (I guess) stereotypically girly because she's a girl" anthro trope. Like she actually looks like what really good basketball players look like!
Though maybe it's just because the style is more "this is an animal on two legs" and less, "this is a human with a furry face", if that makes sense? Like a Kung-Fu Panda style!
Sorry, it's really late at night when I'm watching, so I might not be explaining my POV very well

Confession time: I started to watch this movie on a flight, but I was so jet-lagged that I fell asleep a few minutes in. Watching this review, I kinda regret it...

I guess the Goat Movie is indeed Goated

This was honestly such a GOATED movie. I went to see it for my birthday this year. Also, seeing Dazz actually think this movie is not terrible was not on my September 2026 bingo card.

EDIT: Thanks for the support, you guys!

20:28 and let’s not forget the cat version of no surprises by Radiohead don’t ask me how I figured this out

A fun little detail is less notable side characters like grizz shows character growth. He first starts off by making fun of will and treating him badly because of his size. But later seeing what will achieves, does not only gain respect for will, but also for every small. Seeing the error in his thought, he helps smalls realize their potential by playing ball with them.

32:11 - Something I would've liked to be added to this scene when Mane tells the Magmas to focus entirely on Jett is for one of them to scoff "She's a lame duck! What do we have to worry about?", and then Mane snaps at him to shut up and to not underestimate her. It would give at least one of the other Magmas some characterization, emphasize that Mane is still tunnel-visioned on Jett, and show that he's playing right into the Thorns' hands.

i admit that i was also skeptical about GOAT from the trailers and i will happily admit that i have never in my life been so glad to be totally wrong. this is now one of my top 3 favorite movies of all time. Modo is Icon 🦎

33:09 i would also like to mention some irony in this scene. In the cage match scene, when the horse reached down to goat after he fell, it almost looked like he was going to help him up, but he was actually reaching for his money, but at the end of the game, goat actually reaches out to help the horse on his feet. This is not only ironic, but disrespectful and tasteful, a well deserved gesture.

The animation in this movie so insane, the spiderverse team put maximum effort into every single second and made it natural
The mc is also likeable

14:38 When I first watched this movie, I had my Applejack plushy next to me. So when I heard that line, I had to pause the movie and burst out laughing for about 5 mins. I wasn’t expecting a My Little Pony reference in a Sony movie.

I wish that Will would’ve used his rectangle pupils more on the court to show how he’s adapting to the landscape and the other players. Other than that, I was entertained and enjoyed this movie
