So the EMALS is on the chopping block. The repurposed roller-coaster tech that upped the capabilities of our new aircraft carriers is looking to be replaced with steam, the same technology we've been using for almost as long as aircraft carriers have existed, and the thing that comes out of my ears when I see your mom.

Okay, hear me out.
You add a small boiler into a closet somewhere.
From there you run a pipe next to the EMALS rails that adds dramatic steam and releases a sufficiently theatrical "FWOOOOSH" during launch.
He won't notice the difference. And you've created a "technically steam catapult"
