The pinnacle of the Modern Warfare series sees the most controversial game in the franchise, and, I would argue, the most controversial game in FPS history. From the last stand in Washington DC to the infamous Russian airport, Modern Warfare 2 pushed boundaries to become one of the most nostalgic console shooters in history. With a multiplayer and coop mode that serves as a testament to how video games can shape culture and bring families and friends closer together.

The American missions were always my favorite, these rangers just got home from a deployment in the middle east and now their being deployed to suburbs to repel the impossible, and it's launched at 5:35PM, people coming home from a long day at work, making dinner plans, going to the grocery store, going out with the GF/BF for nice evening and then all of sudden swaths of MIGs and AN124 roar overheard, paradropping troops and BTRs, it's really compelling.

The defense of Washington is arguably one of the darkest and most realistic stories in video games. From the constant radio chatter using IRL military talk, to the way the player keeps getting put in stressful encounters, and the overall theme of continuous loss...

The game itself may be over the top action in a hastily wrapped bow, but they nailed the truth of war.

One of my favorite parts of this game that is easily overlooked is right before you kill Shepard. If you stand by the ruined truck, he starts talking to Soap. Tells him he was always a brilliant soldier, but always too afraid to take the extra step.

1:03:06 I live in PG County, Maryland. 25-30 min away from DC. The first time I played this mission, I'm in 8th grade at the time and I was downstairs in our game room. I damn near having a panic attack when that cut scene came on and reading the texts going across the bottom of the screen. Zero clue on what to do. The TV wasn't hooked up to cable, it was just for gaming, so it sent shivers down my spine that we're even getting this message. Excellent way to instill fear into the players that live in the DMV 😂😂 Cheeky Bastards

The Lincoln Memorial radio chatter still gives me chills to this day. I play it in the background while I play helldivers 2 defense of super earth it just fits the overall vibe of it.

There's even wilder moment, that shadow company in one of the voice lines mentions Langley, so I think that Shepard is a fall guy for secret CIA operation. That means they are the main antagonist of mw2, operating everyone from the shadow.

1:14:00 it dawned on me that these two countries are fighting at the WW2 memorial, a war that they fought side by side but are now enemies

Love these long retrospectives on games that used to be this good

Sad to see we didn't get any more ranger gameplay in Modern warfare 3 besides a brief mention in a cutscene. The Modern day 75th Ranger Regiment is awesome and COD didn't want to use them in any future games after that. You know, besides "COD: Future War" even though that game never came to light, we would've seen the Rangers again.

I don't know how Cod is successful war propaganda when immediately after playing just the first few missions I've immediately concluded that I hate war and war sucks
