Every Way Meta Tracks You, and How to Fight Back

Meta has control over many of the social platforms that people use every day. Since Facebook started in 2004, the company has been fine-tuning how to turn user data from apps like Instagram and WhatsApp into ad revenue. Now Meta’s $1.5 trillion market cap isn’t enough for them, so they’ve been looking for ways to monetize beyond their own platforms. That means that even if you never choose to use a Meta platform or device, you may still be subject to their data-collection schemes.

Let us walk you through the many ways Meta surveils you and how to best stay hidden from the Meta machine.

some people will hear "meta turned your device into a toilet cam" and respond with "idc i have nothing to hide anyway." the hardest part of the battle for privacy is that not many people seem to actually value privacy.

This series is excellent. Please keep it going and make one for every major tech company.

Can we just go back to the 80s and the 90s. It was a much simpler time, where we weren't just data objects...

No way I trust that any company stops doing all of the things we toggle off.

It's psychotic considering my entire life is also being published somewhere, that I have no access to, but the entire community talks about it while nobody puts a stop to it.

This has to be shown in schools and everywhere

I recently learned that Facebook was scraping all of your photos regardless of your settings, violating its own terms. It was using it for Ai. So, i think blocking it all in settings is pointless. Uninstall is the only option.

I deleted my Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. Feels so much better now! 😊

The fact that they create "shadow profiles" for people who don't even use their apps is some next-level dystopian stuff. 👤🚫

Privacy is not only a personal concern - if a company gets profits by being evil, it's much more difficult for other companies to compete with that. They either have to become evil too, or offer paid services. So, not caring about privacy is boosting the monopoly of American Tech Giants even more, making it impossible for other regions to compete.

I canceled my Facebook account well over a decade ago because I could see where it was headed. I lost touch with all my high school and college friends after that, sadly. I never got into VR because Meta dominated the space, and it's a tech I was initially excited about. Sometimes you have to draw a line in the sand and put your foot down, even if it means you have to give up some things to do so.

I'm surrounded with "I don't care about my privacy" people unfortunately

The 'convincing family and friends' to not use these products is a lot easier said than done. I've found that people most active users of these products don't care in the slightest about the tracking or global surveillance they are contributing to as long as it means they aren't inconvenienced and can get their dopamine fix.

4:43 "it's the envelope, not the letter" is a really great way of explaining metadata

We need laws in the EU which forbid to wear any Glasses at all in public which can record the surrounding.

Apply that to your phone, tv, car, smart watch, anything with Internet access with or without a camera. Are we having fun yet.
I wonder what Edward Snowden is doing these days?
