I thought it was crazy enough you wanted to challenge yourself to make an axe head in an hour. But, to have a COMPLETED axe in an hour? Handle and all? Absolute madlad. Respect.

The guy with the one-hour axe was able to kill the other two smiths, winning the war for his faction.

In an hour I would have a weird lump of metal...

In an hour, might have figured out how to turn on the forge, maybe

If I could finish a job in 1 hour even if taking my time would yield better result, my boss would ask me like “why would you need 1 day if you could do it in 1 hour?”

I didnt see anyone pointing this out. The camera angels are amazing man. The placement, the exposure, the focous and everything. I am a hobby photographer and i can really enjoy that.
Also the axes look amazing of course and i still like seing the blacksmithing. Bith of them are hobbys of mine :)

I saw that slab of purpleheart and my immediate thought was "Your cutting tools are going to HATE you, Nils!"  cut to broken bandsaw blade 🤣

Regarding Japanese katanas, I recall reading about a regulation that prohibited smiths from producing more than one blade a month. The logic was simple: when you treat sword-making like fast food, the quality becomes just as abysmal.

I think this shows the shift to industral production really well and its advantages and flaws. At one hour you can't take the proper time to make sure everything was done right and you had to take shortcuts to get there by using a pre made handle and at a week you spend so much time to ensure it was better then other axes that you just tried stuff that may honestly not even be appreciated anymore by the user of it. The 1 hour one really gives me the vibe of modern companies who can never admit their faults and the week axe gives the vibe of old guilds and the professions just doing things that are completly uneccesary but still have to be paid for. It shows why it worked so well to industrialize but also that we may have went too far and need to pace what is made not below a minimum time so the people who make it can be happy with their work.

I am a 19y old studying blacksmithing at in norway.
I learn more about axe forging from your videos than i do at school 😂
Love the content, keep it coming ❤️

Hey, @NilsÖgren. Just wanted to let you know when your are working with purple heart try to wear a respirator and eye protection especially when sanding. Purple heart has been known to be relatively toxic, especially to mucosal lining like the inside of the lungs, eyes, nose, etc. Its not necessarily the biggest concern, but its definitely something to keep in mind when working with tropical hardwoods overall!

I love how when he started getting stressed from the clock ticking down he went full Swedish 🤣

The frustration during the making of the hour axe was palpable.

imagine you need an axe and it's genuinely faster to make your own rather than going to the shop

Axe, handle and sheath in one day, definitely showing off 😁
You do a lovely job on the axes 👍🏼

And the 1 week axe is a thing of beauty, you can really see why they have big price tags.

44:56  the 1 day axe was also my favourite

I can't overstate just how much I appreciate you calling it a pattern welded steel instead of "damascus" like everyone else and their mother, and from people who frankly should know better.
Also personally like the 1 day axe the most as well... Just something about it really emphasizes the classic charm.

Forged to polished damascus is actually a pretty neat transition.  I think I like it more than just all polished damascus.

now i hold a challenge
