Never seen a free YouTube crafting channel that teaches "HOW" so well, before. Lovely jubbly indeed, sir.

"Even a curve is made up of flat surfaces."  My man just invented calculus.

The more I learn about primitive crafts like stonemasonry, metalworking, and woodworking, the more I appreciate just how much of human life has been spent making things flat

I am a stonemason but my brother is an engineer. When he started training, he had to learn how to file a perfect cube of steel by hand. He hasn't had to file any perfect cubes in his day to day work but its the same principle of learning the handtool skills

Spent several years learning this....I remember my first attempt.....my (very old-skool) rutor said "A blind man'd be pleased to see it,Mr Barber" 😀

Dude I'm an American stonemason..,mostly in Virginia, chimneys, walls, patios, restoration and was blessed to work on our National Cathedral. I got to be friends with Rick Hart. Hard work ,I'm too old now and I miss it SO much. We used a rawhide mallet on limestone. Enjoymy son ,carry on. God bless

Loved it.  I spent 4 years as a hod tender and no one taught me diddly squat on how to use chisels properly.

Please keep the instructional videos coming. I learn so much watching you work as you explain. I know editing vids is tedious. But it is appreciated!

When you were boning in the block my brain realized that I had seen this before but in carpentry when planing a surface by hand.

Just started a job on a church in Birmingham and I've got no idea what I'm doing so quick tutorial it is 😂😂

Enjoyed your video thankyou!
I’m a violinist but have this other love of working with stone…. Garden walls etc .. which I do when I can with due regard for my hands!
Loved seeing how all the different tools work and what you can achieve with them! Maybe in my next life!

Definitely would go for more basics videos! Amazing to think how many buildings have been done this way. Sure elevates the credit to the craftspeople

These are exactly the kinds of things I'm interested in seeing.

Yeah. I loved this video. I’m sculptor, but I never learned stone carving. You other videos really inspired me to try it and now this video is giving me lots of value. Thank you very much. I would love to see other educational videos like this one.

Could you do a short video on chisel sharpening please?. You're a great presenter btw, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video.

The boning in process, is similar to how woodworkers use winding sticks to sight in a board they will plane down flat by hand, and the straight edge wax marking up, is similar to how a master reference surface is inked up to rub on cast iron, to show the high spots to be scraped down by hand, and the process repeatedly done, until there's an evenly distributed uniform pattern of inked high spots across the the entire surface plane for a flat bearing surface. I am 60 years old and don't anticipate taking up your trade. However, the general knowledge, and your explanation provides a very real sense or feel of the basics. Which is to say, quite satisfying to watch just how the basic process, when mastered, produces quite amazing results. 😂 and then showing the time difference of the process being done by machine afterwards! made it hard not to laugh, because it was such a stark contrast that it makes perfect sense why things aren't done by hand anymore, except to have a starting point for learning and getting a feel of the basics... thank you for imparting the basic knowledge, it's satisfying to watch and learn in an abstract way, but I also understand, a person will never truly learn until they pick up a hammer and chisel to do what you displayed... that's the only way to turn basic knowledge into an actual skill... be safe!

Nice score as well. 😊

Can't believe there is somebody in England making a living cutting stone in this day of age. I've a friend got in to stone carving in Spain but is struggling to find work as he's trained as a stone carver rather than a mason. Very well made explanation of the skill, thanks for the upload.

Who knew i needed to watch this? Informative and fun. Subscribed.

I'm a fitter turner, during training we spent an entire month 8 hours a day bench fitting. By the end of that we were expected to be making multiple interlocking parts to a .05mm tolerance by hand. have i ever had to that since professionally? Nope, but it gave me a damn appreciation for how much work a milling machine and a lathe do.
