NASA sent the Dart satellite to crash into a small asteroid, to change its orbit. It did better than expected.

It's crazy to see that barringer crater hit so close to the visitor center and didn't destroy it.

It was quite the trend in the 90's with movies like Deep Impact and Armageddon.

Just found your channel and binged for 2+ hrs. It's nice to find another person who's as curious about stuff as I am. Thank you for being open, articulate, fair and a dozen other qualities that make (imo) a good human. A well spoken, intelligent student of everything w/her own channel? Who wouldn't want to watch more? Keep them coming! 👍

"And this could happen tomorrow...?"
- "Well it could, yeah."

Everybody laughs nervously

I just noticed your channel has no "shorts." That rates a sub. I mean, I was on my way to do that anyway but that seals the deal.

When she was a child, it was easy to get my daughter to come in at night by telling her there was a duende in the garden.  I'm not worried by mythical creatures but I hope we never have to worry about a duende that is a celestial body.

This is precisely why we need to become a multi-planetary species sooner rather than later! As someone once said, having too many eggs in one basket can be risky, and that certainly didn’t end well for the dinosaurs. Asteroids pose a significant threat, especially large ones. However, I believe that we are more likely to face extinction through war or perhaps a more dangerous pandemic than from being wiped out by an asteroid.

more Veritasium, please! I hate math but I even watch his maths/physics videos because it's Veritasium. Super interesting!

"Lucifer's Hammer" was written by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, if you couldn't tell from the book cover she showed.  Larry Niven is one of my favorite SF authors.  It's mostly about the aftereffects of the comet impact, and what happens to human society.  Highly recommended.

I love your reactions to VSauce and Veritasium the most!

I always look forward to your videos!

The Serenity prayer comes to mind... there are things beyond our control.

I've been to meteor crater, its very impressive and worth the trip.

Hi, what a pleasure to watch an intelligent lady that has a thirst for knowledge second to none. I do commend you. Actually i think you deserve at least one million subs. Since i subscribed earlier today i was watching your videos non stop. Amazing. And ofcourse me being feom South Africa the rugby videos are the best. Maybe a reccomendation would be to watch Cheslin Kolbe. Keep it up

Nothing quite as reassuring as watching death coming for us knowing there is nothing that you can do about it.

Hi, there is a movie called Meteor (1979) with Sean Connery about a large asteroid heading for Earth, a pretty good disaster epic.

MUSIC about comet/asteroid .. Kryptônia from Zé Ramalho. 😊

Lucifer’s Hammer! One of the best novels ever.

The prologue of Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama describes a city killer impact that sparks the development of a Space Guard program to prevent that loss from ever happening again. That program later finds Rama.

Which goes back to what he said about the first and best thing we can do. Know what we have out there to begin with. We don't have any space monitoring system in place to replace the very limited ground telescopes being used (part time between other observations). I think many discoveries are actually through amateurs and then verified by professionals.
