Hey Jamie,
Thank you for taking the time to do this video. I appreciate other voices weighing in, we might not always agree as a collecting community but I think it’s important to have other voices on certain topics. I like to promote that discussion and talking points for our hobbies, I don’t mean to attack anyone in particular but as you mentioned. I may have touched a few nerves with this one. Appreciate you staying level headed and weighing in your thoughts.

All good for you using my videos. I think generally these things are important to be discussed and I do look forward to hearing other experiences and view points.

Aaaaaand thank you for the shout out and sharing the video, very thoughtful.

How can you call 4K "the new hotness"?

4K Blu-Rays have been out for a whole DECADE. That is OLD!

I agree with all of this. I currently have a very small, but curated collection, and even I’ve fallen into some of these traps. The current trap being always looking for the next thing. I do have limits set in place that stop me from constantly buying luckily.

It also has me taking another look at some titles in my collection. I already have a rule that if a movie doesn’t speak to me in any particular way, then it isn’t worthy of the shelf. However, I didn’t think about it in the way of “If I got rid of this, would I be sad about it?” It sounds like common sense, but it was the last thing I was thinking about. I was already thinking about getting rid of 1 of mine before, but under that new question, I’m considering getting rid of some more.

Thanks for the video man, really helped remind myself that there’s nothing wrong with getting rid of some if you don’t really like them.

I'm 54 and retired so I have been Collecting Physical Media and Games for years now. I've Curated a collection of DVDs and Blu Ray movies and shows that I Like. My Game room has four 3 level Shelf stands and a Small entertainment center. I have 340 DVD and Blu Ray movies and Shows. 70 plus physical Xbox games, 84 Wii U games, 45 Wii games, 100 3ds games, 56 PS 2 games, and 38 Vita games. 50 plus CD's, a couple of Albums and Cassette tapes. So I Own physical Media but I'm not Obsessed with it. But I understand those who went Baws Out . 😊

I don't buy 4Ks I only buy bluray to me bluray is good enough and I watch all my movies over and over again :)

Something rarely if ever talked about is the amount of time in a day/year/lifetime that we have.  If you spent all waking hours watching content you'd average around 5800 hours a year.  Now lets take the extreme collections like you content guys.  how many hours of content do you have stored in all those DVD/BluRay boxes?  Now guesstimate how much time you have left on Earth.  Will you have enough time to put a dent in the collection?  If yes, then get going.  If no, then start liquidating.

guy doesnt know the difference between a collector and a hoarder 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

If u want to buy a movie eveeytime you're out. Its your right. I disagree with everything he says.  Its ppl life and they can do what they like to do. Its perfectly normal.  No one has the right to tell ppl what to do and whats normal. If that person is happy im all for it. What is normal. Why do you want to be normal. Hes absolutely wrong.

Bout 10 years ago when Netflix took over game stop and cex were selling 2nd hand dvds for 50cent , I stocked up and got into collecting all my favs , now my shed is full but I’m so happy , most good movies are not streamed anywhere and if they are they are altered especially with soundtrack , when signing the rights for the soundtrack most movie companies never invisioned streaming  so song rights had to be re purchased , some of the best song writers said no hence shitty versions of movies on streaming service , so happy I built up collection , but cause I bought 2nd hand I didn’t spend much at all maybe €500 in total , really glad I done it

Like a baby with a pacifier.

What is ‘normal’ these days?

I have always collected things since i was very young. And after burning out on things and moving a lot Ive landed on some simple rules i try to stick to, to keep my collecting joyful:
1. I dont collect anything designed with collecting in mind
2. I dont collect anything i dont get joy from outside of the collection.
3. I dont buy something i am indifferent on just to "complete" a collection.
4. Dont buy online if it can be avoided.
I stopped playing with action figs long ago and stopped enjoying the look of them displayed, so i donated or sold everything i didnt have a sentimental connection too. (Still have stuff in storage jusy havent had the time to sell)stopped buying comics i wasnt reading anymore. Didnt like dedixating my walls to >2000dvds so i paper sleeved 99% and trashed the cases. Ive currently got a growing vhs collection and i buy ones ive never heard of. I watch them all and if they arent worth selling and i dont see myself returning to them for one thing or another i donate them to shops or give them to friends who i think would like them. It feels great! Obv there are exceptions to the rule. Horror vhs can be hard to find and if i notice the price obline creeping up i will grab something before it gets over 20$ if im having no luck at thrift and estate sales. But truly frim my heart putting limits on my ability to collect makes me feel like a kid again, having to hunt in stores for cool stuff, meeting people naturaly with similar interests, and the thought of "should i get this? Is it worth it?" Even when i regret not getting something later feels so much better than the apathy of find8ng everything im looking for online at like the expected price and ordering it all and it arrives all at once and goes in a shelf and i move on immediately.

Also want to add ive never cared about 4k, it never looks like the cinema experience or the home video experience (except for big fish.) I want VHS and DVDs of things that i remember watching on a CRT so i can watch them the way they looked then. I like bluray for the better audio, but i dont even have my speakers set up in my new place because im honestly less interested in new bombastic tech/SFX demo modern movies than ever and the 80s-00s films that im watching i want to watch on a crt anyway. I think people get so tied up in big number/new tech they dont spend enough time asking themselves "do i like it more?" "Does it actually look better?" For me as soon as i thought about it that way i realized, "no the lord of the rings was never this washed out and cool toned. And i could never see that the back drops were painted in indiana jones." It sucks

Your WWF VHS's actually differ from what's streaming online. KOTR '99 was censored and a lot of stuff later on like Hogan's Hendrix theme music, a lot of WCW wrestlers' music was changed and is not online, but only on VHS and DVD.

Basically, just collect your favourite shows and movies as you remember them, or the best version of something, like those Dragon Boxes up there. OTT platforms generally have ones that are changed or censored at times.

Definitely collect physical media. Buy what you can afford, save for what you can't.

No harm.

I have never jumped on the 4k bandwagon, I have been upgrading from DVD to blu ray when possible, but being honest blu ray is good enough quality for me, I have no interest in going out and buying a 4k TV and/or player, just can't afford it right now any way being honest, I'm happy with my blu rays and DVD's. Also, I can't upgrade everything I had on DVD to blu ray, so I will have no chance of ever managing this on 4k, it's bad enough having two formats on the go, there's no way I'm having three.

Yes it's a dangerous hobby, I wouldn't want to have THAT much stuff or be that vulnerable to FOMO.  But I will say, as vices go, it's not as bad as drugs, alcohol, vaping, porn or food.  It doesn't impact your ability to be healthy and productive.  And the money you spend doesn't disappear into a consumable, these things retain value.

32:17 woah! Wasn’t expecting to hear my YouTube name.

I’m still watching. I just don’t always comment.
