I still buy regular DVD's, so cost effective, and being in my 50's having grown up with TV and VHS for what I watched, DVD quality is just fine with me, sometimes I'll pick up Blu Rays too, but DVD has a much bigger selection of what was released for it, so I'm happy if it's only on that, plus the cost is so much better. you can easily find something you love and remember that was only released as far as DVD for 5 bucks, can't beat that.

When I was younger I was buying blu rays like mad. Getting anything I could afford.

Nowadays I'm on the 4k train but I'm curating. Not just consuming.
I'm buying films I really like or want to see. If it turns out rubbish I can sell it or trade it. I'm trying not to end up like before with hundreds of things I don't actually care about just because its another one to tick off and fill a spot.

I know the feeling of collecting and the drive to buy more and that craving for a new one.
But I now understand the issues it brings. For instance, what's the point in paying a lot of money for  films you keep factory sealed? Watch them. Enjoy them. Share them.

Don't let the collecting be the whole experience. Let the films be the experience. At the end of your time, it's not going to fun to look back on that huge shelf and realised you didn't watch half of them, didn't even open a lot of them.

I don't consider myself much of a collector anymore..
More like a custodian.
I don't see it so much as a collection anymore either.
It's more like building a Network. I still add to the library, here and there, but for the most part it's just occasional upgrades. Maybe a season of a show.
I don't stream pay for cable or Netflix or any of that. Just what's here, or free on YouTube

I do not purchase  Steelbook editions  not worth the price

I think that the reality that it’s going to be a niche market for collectors, and therefore going to cost a lot more.

Dope intro! 😆

40 years ago, a new release vhs movie cost $100. That was a lot more money relative to salaries back then.

Love the intro. 😂

That looks just like the "wall of dvds" shelves I've built.

Bargain bins have disappeared from JB HIFI stores. One could buy a stack of DVDs costing  between $2.00 and $5.00 each. Most of these were rare out of print DVDs. I wish I bought more now.  They now probably destroy these DVDs instead of selling them.

There is also another option by bypassing the Official studio release and that is to buy pirated versions from weekend markets and other sources. Hardly buy any new films or series official release  ( Paid $10 for Project Hail Mary DVD  and  Around $20 for New release Series) and the Picture Quality and Audio are fine to me. Granted this solution is still  not possible in all  release cases it is worth seeking out than rather being Price Gouged by the likes of JB HI FI. I also have an OCP collecting disorder so i understand collecting desires but you do not have to be a slave to Corporate marketing completely.

As a wrestling fan i spent $1049 AU on 67 NJPW dvd's because it hard to find those dvd's out in the wild. Ive been collecting wrestling since 2003 and most wrestling dvd's like R.OH,IWA,PWG and NJPW are limited dvd's sometimes the only way to get them is when someone on Ebay sells their collection. Re-sellers know they are rare and they can set the price and there is nothing we can do if we want to complete our collection.

Heraldo has pretty good rhythm.

Retail prices are insane online but mostly I have been buying most movies on DVD and some on blu ray not many on 4K

Adventures Of Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, The (Imprint Collection Limited Edition) my goodness that went up in price since 2024 when it was $95.96. I remember i got that for my birthday at JB when it was 30% top of that $10 JB gift card. Almost half price. It’s one of my all time favourite Australian movie. I couldn’t believe it’s now $119.

Yeah prices, collectors edition only (like the recent troy 4k it's already sold out) are hitting me. For instance, not high priority but 'my best friends wedding' spike 45€ not cause it's massive popular, but cause they underprinted it, a second print run feels unlikely. So conclusion, now on 'Notting Hill' (produced more, but selling also a lot more) i have to decide, 29€ or wait for sale.

Luckely i bought a ton of 4k blu-ray for average 12€ (including tax) a piece, via i think a automatic (forgotten by website) outlet, and -40% sale per 4+ disks. Now they back up again from 12 all the way to 29-38€.

I'll also be agressive to skip single movies and with for all in one boxset, they generally are cheaper. To reach my average price target, without boxsets not gonna work. Just got Star trek 1-10 (two sets), for 14.6€per movie.

Free Guy, annihilation i have on blu-ray and i'm forcing myself to watch first on blu-ray before i buy 4k.

Kill Bill 'bloody affair' is overpriced imo, the movie is nice but not crazy nice, 25€ ok, but not 40+ for this. They even stack the disc on the same platter on top of each other...

I love project Hail Mary  I got the blu ray version

They need physical media price lower to complete with streaming this is the only way to fight streaming

i was looking at the ROBOTECH collectors edition but 300 bucks is something ! cant justify to myself and i feel alot of collectors have that number that makes them walk

Ok? Go to an estate sale or a garage sale?

They are rarely over 1.00 and you have THOUSANDS of titles.

VHSs routinely are like 50 cents

Tapes are 25 cents.

I have hundreds of CDs and for darn sure dont pay more than a dollar each.
