My local is only 200 years old, but then it is called The New Inn

If we had a museum or gift shop for every old building, we'd never have space for anything else. Old is ordinary here - but we are still proud of it - just very quietly so.

Love the pubs when they sing. Great for people who might be lonely.

You have to admire the ghost of Juliet Tewsley: even though she drowned herself in 1050AD, she must have her own accurate calendar for her to appear every March 17th - exceptionally admirable since when she died Europe was still running on the Julian calendar, but Juliet's ghost makes allowances for the switch to the Gregorian standard by appearing 13 days earlier in the year, (just to uphold the tradition, of course!)

Priest hole tunnels were built as secret passages to allow monks to escape persecution and death. Not to sneak to the pub.

You’re by far and away my favourite reactor. You actually show an interest in things which is refreshing! Love your channel pal 👍

953 isn't that early - it's only 57 minutes before 'last orders'! 🤣

The Sheeps Heid (say heed) meaning head, is an amazing place with wild geese in the carpark.

The notes on the ceiling of The Nutshell were placed there during the war, by pilots, soldiers and sailors, to buy a their first drink on returning. Sadly, as you can see, many didn't make it back. They were left as a mark of respect. Loved this JJ. Never apologise for long videos! Cheers.

My dad passed away just before Christmas last year, the Adam & Eve pub was the last place myself and my dad sat & had a drink together whilst my mum was kayaking on the river with my siblings and nephews and niece's!

My ex used to run the George Inn and I stayed there every weekend in the 90's. It is beautiful and upstairs the floors slope dramatically. Sometimes late at night in the cellar bar, you heard remnants of the monk's chanting

Love your reactions and choice of themes

Worth remembering that there's probably 40 or more pubs across the uk that claim to be the oldest. Ive been in at least 3 of them. Most villages in the UK will have a pub thats at least 400 years old. Its my favourite thing about us. There's nothing else quite like it anywhere else in the world. And there's  nothing else quite like walking to an old village pub and getting drunk on a cold winters night when the pub is busy and theres a roaring fire.

Nottingham also had so many caves because people lived in them! It was cheap housing banned in the 1800s.

I'm no true Scotsman, but pretty sure "Sheep Heid" would be pronounced "Sheep Heed" not "Hide".  (Also, I've never heard any of the rivers Ouse be pronounced "Ooss", pretty sure they mostly get pronounced "ooze")

Crazy that there's nothing from the southwest in this, pubs around Glastonbury, Cheddar and Churchill like the crown inn are ancient and are riddled with history too. But then, there's a lot of pubs here xD

Pub and Inn names in the UK are as Historical as the building itself.
The Jamaica Inn on Bodmin Moore in Cornwall, reputed to have been the headquarters of a large smuggling ring (1800's) and made famous by the novelist Daphne du Maurier in her book Jamaica Inn.
Another Cornish one is The Bucket of Blood in Hayle.

Mummified cats were a not-uncommon feature in very old buildings. Builders and roofers would put them above/below thresholds or inside chimney-pieces as a charm against evil spirits, in Ye Olden Dayes. In some old folk-songs, the tradition is even more sinister, where the bodies of stillborn babies would be buried this way. Over time, they refrained from harming animals and/or children and would stow away something like a child's shoe above the threshold or in the chimney instead. We found a child's shoe above a doorway in an old house we lived in, when we were renovating it...the whole idea still gives me the creeps.

I wondered if The George at Southwark would make the list - have drunk in there a few times myself. The narration didn't mention that Pilgrims would meet there before heading out of London to Canterbury to the South.
Although these are some of our very oldest pubs, they wouldn't have museums and gift shops (although some might have a display marking any specific historic event that happenend there) because there are so many old pubs throughout the UK that we don't really think of them as anything special until someone reminds us just how old they are.

Many monasteries brewed beer ,which is why monks frequented pubs in the Middle Ages.
