There are some projects that arrive and we know they're going to require a lot of work. Then there are projects that in the midst of a lot of work, decide to pile on more work. And then there are the rare cases where the work that is ultimately required is of a scope and scale that is simply awesome. For this painting, a portrait of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, Italy, known for having a vial of his blood liquify thrice a year, the work required to save the painting might just require a Fourth Miracle.

This series is absolutely fascinating to me. I've always wondered if it was possible to remove the canvas while keeping the paint layer intact. It seems to me to be the ultimate conservation procedure. Simply amazed to see it happen!

The most fascinating part for me is how much of this restoration is designed for someone decades from now. The nylon, reversible adhesive and strain-relief layer aren’t just fixing the painting, they’re deliberately avoiding trapping the next conservator inside today’s decisions. I spend a lot of time filming old places and wondering why some things survive while others disappear, so that philosophy really clicked with me. Good conservation seems less about making something look new and more about giving it another century without pretending the intervention never happened.

I really like that you chose to use an italian style stretcher. Its a small thing that is probably not a game changer to the restoration but it speaks to level of personalised attention the painting gets. Seeing someone do their profession with care and attention is so satisfying.

There was a huge amount of progress in this episode. It almost feels like a movie adaptation of a book - the basics are there, but this could have been 3 or 4 hours of film to capture all the details that went into it.
Looking forward to the final episode. I am still amazed that a process like this even exists!

It boggles the mind all of the things you are doing to rescue this painting. One thing that was amazing was watching you detach the paint layer to sit on its own. Incredible! The number of steps to replace the rotted canvas was so interesting, and then adding the texture to the new areas. I can't wait to see the final product!
