Hey everyone, just wanted let you know I have deleted the ad portion of the video. I was not aware of the controversies, and I really appreciate you for letting me know. I'm a huge advocate for therapy and medication to better mental health, and I would never want to steer anyone in the wrong direction when dealing with something so important. 🖤

I hate it when I find a Great story teller and binge watch until there's nothing left.

To think all this started because a dad thought his seed was special.  Goes to show his fast delusion can spread. Its sad af

I feel like we're majorly overlooking the time she spent with her uncle here - from research I had to do during my undergraduate degree I learnt that the Pietists were generally quite ecstastic in their spirituality, so I don't think the move to Pietism can entirely account for her becoming so depressed and talking about her "sin". I suspect something bad happened to her during her time at her uncle's - perhaps even at the hands of the uncle :(

"Immoral, and a person of indifferent character" would be a great t-shirt, just sayin

I love old cases. The older the better. I really enjoy hearing cases from the 1800's and further back.

Love these historical cases. Her father filled her head with this nonsense from birth and created this deranged creature. Thank god he had the sense to take his son away that night. But he bears a great deal of this blame. But i also wonder what happened with her uncle too. She seems very changed by being brought to live with him. It seems more than by her new religion. Then losing her child seems to have tipped her over the edge. So distressing that people followed her madness so far.

I would love to hear more about lesser known older cults

The things people do in the name of Someone who simply said "love one another"

Dang. Caspar Peter didn’t kill his sisters; he was a victim, really, having his wounds tended. I’m curious what each person was convicted of. Thanks for sharing this story. It’s truly fascinating.

Fun fact: Napoleon Bonaparte was born on the 15th of August, which is the day Mary is supposed to have ascended to heaven, and he saw it as a sign that he was chosen by God (which was important to have the power in France for the Royalist and the Church) It was so important for him, he made it a national holiday. It's kind of "funny" that a cult leader born on Christmas day, and so seen as a sign because of the Christ (Jesus wasn't born on Christmas, but whatever), thought Napoleon's son was the antichrist.
If there's an afterlife, I hope the two of them are beefing about it, because it's funny to imagine.

I kind of feel bad for Margareta, it honestly sounds like postpartum psychosis compounded by guilt. That stuff can get way out of hand.

I was born in Switzerland. I have lived here for 23 years. How have I never heard about Margareta or her cult? Also you did a good job with the pronunciation of the names and places.

I truly believe that the people who believe they're "chosen" or a "prophet" to this extreme are both severely mentally ill as well as either grow up being indoctrinated or discover religion and throw themselves entirely into it.
It's so sad to hear about.
But then the people who follow them so incredibly whole-heartedly absolutely baffles my mind.
How would anyone, even being indoctrined themselves, be so incredibly gullible to follow someone to the extreme right down to killing?!

You do an amazing job at bringing these stories to life Sommer!

For anyone struggling with mental health issues, we should never believe that medications, alone, can help us. I was raised by a psychologist, & surrounded by mental health professionals & to finally get sober, I needed therapy & meds. If you meet a psychiatrist (the dr that can prescribe the meds), & that dr doesn't encourage you to also try therapy, I wouldn't trust that dr. Its also really important to remember that therapist & drs are also human, & they may not meet your needs, for a variety of reasons. They not have the experience you need, which can be related to race, gender, class, etc. They may not known enough about addiction, or trauma & abuse. They may just be a bad fit for you, maybe your personality & theirs doesn't jive well. That's all normal, & you should just try a new one. Remember that you can & should advocate for yourself, ask questions. It saved my life, & the lives of many of my favorite people.

Sorry to be so blunt but I just don't understand how people can be so completely stupid & gullible sometimes. What a shame

You always wonder if any of these cult leaders ACTUALLY believe what they preach. Clearly, past cult leaders were power tripping on their ability to deceive others. Heavens Gate, and David koresh are different. But this case is so insane and their delusions are so scary.

Never has the word insane been so aptly used. This was totally insane, and unusual as to who died. Awesome job Sommer.

Please cover the nuns of Loudun ... an amazing case of mass hysteria and accusations of witchcraft in a French convent.

This was definitely a WTF story 😮
