Critiquing A World That Doesn't Exist

Wifies attempted to create a mind-bending Minecraft mystery with Searching For A World That Doesn't Exist and its sequel, Destroying A World That Doesn't Exist. Instead, the series delivers a high-budget build showcase wrapped in derivative fanfiction.

In this video essay, I break down why masking a standard roleplay behind an ARG format doesn't automatically create intrigue, how the narrative fundamentally misunderstands its primary inspiration, Robert W. Chambers' 1895 classic The King in Yellow, and why replacing actual character development with surface-level puzzle solving completely destroys narrative stakes.

I’ve always maintained that the first Wifies video is the perfect example of how the King in Yellow should be handled, but the second one basically turns into the Gravity Falls season finale.

i think changing the "king in yellow" from an entity so unfathomable it had to be censored in the first video, to being a clump of references to children's cartoon villains that spends a minute going over its plan for world domination, was what really broke it for me. the scary part of it was not knowing if it was a tangible entity or if it could even be defeated at all and that all got thrown out for an adventure time lich reference... okay

"Pretending the sequel doesn't exist"

I feel like I'm the only one who saw the render distance in the second video and thought to myself "that's some impressive rendering for a dusty laptop found in a locker"

>Be King In Yellow
>A Transcendental being
>Get outsmarted in your own domain by Minecraft glitching and a conveniently placed book

I think what annoys me the most about this series is that wifies constantly says how smart his characters are rather than let the viewer actually come to the conclusion natrually. It kinda feels like a 14 year old bragging about their super strong and super smart OC 😭

just wanna say that I really appreciated when you differentiated between unfiction and an ARG, its been something that bothers me and im so happy to see someone make that distinction :D

Searching for a good critique that DOES exist

I am almost certain that the second video wasn't originally meant to exist, and the plot was intended to be deliberately vague, but gay fan art prompted the creator to make episode 2 where D3rlord3 and Avery interact with each other.

One thing i absolutely hate is how they make the ONE creature that is described as omniscient a idiot

Searching For A World That Doesn't Exist made me read The King in Yellow, but reading that, in turn, made me wish SFAWTDE was written better.

yeah so basically TLDR: minecraft larp series has a really good first episode and SUPER falls off immediately after
