There is something captivating about the rivalry between Wolverine and Sabretooth that has always caught my attention. I mean Wolverine has always been a character, but to match his fierce and arrogant personality alongside his raw physical strength and Adamantium claws, requires something special. As it turns out, that perfect opponent is someone who has a shared history with Logan, no matter which origin story you pick. In a way, it is also slightly sad because both Wolverine and Sabretooth have grown with the same kind of trauma, and yet, circumstances have pitted them against each other more often than not. I guess that is why it was so heartening to see them team up for a common mission in the recent X-Men 97 episode, even though the showrunners still managed to fit in a fight sequence, even though Wolverine wasn’t quite himself at the time. Anyway, so I have been wondering, given the similarities between the two and how they are so evenly matched, what really sets them apart? 1. Sabretooth is vicious and cunning. He is not a dumb thug. He has a lot of personality as well, so if he works as a mercenary he’ll try to indulge his sadistic tendencies and take liberties while on the job.
2. Sabretooth may not be dumb but he is not a mastermind either. He’s not smart enough to become an unseen king of crime and it’s not really his thing, too.
3. Don’t bring him in the page if you’re not going to do him justice. Don’t have him fight heroes who can’t take him because you’ll have to nerf him. Don’t have him just fill up space and get rid of him by a fight off-screen or a quick slash or two and a couple of one-liners. A fight with Sabretooth is the main event. It’s a horror film, and you have a serial killer and a creature feature wrapped in one.
4. And I can’t stress that enough. Whenever Wolverine fights Sabretooth, it’s not guaranteed that he’ll win. In fact, it’s more likely that he’ll lose if he doesn’t fight like hell.
2: Those same opponents noted in my first point have repeatedly acknowledged that his adamantium skeleton lends to massive upgrades in his physical potency and resilience when brawling and, particularly, to the force of his already lethal blows (he’s felled mature trees with just his blows before in instances fighting Hulk, Sasquatch, and Wendigo). In the comics, remember that Logan’s style of fighting when facing Creed has almost always been more “take it and dish it back out” than utilizing his substantial advantage in fighting skills. However, it also can’t be denied that he’s won far more confrontations than he’s decisively lost throughout the very long list of their canon encounters. Many times, Creed has tried to actually kill Logan and ALWAYS failed. Logan, on the other hand, has almost never tried to kill Creed more than put him down. And in the rare occasions he’s chosen to make it final, he has— once lobotomizing Creed viciously and deliberately, and thrice actually killing him (once by beheading him, once by extracting his heart and another time by tearing out his spine). Eeeew!
