Former Aussie great Alan Davidson spoke to Frank Crook on 2GB back in 2006 about the passing of English cricketing great Fred Trueman and the on-field battles he had. We also hear an excerpt from a speech Dickie Bird gave about his old teammate.

Very generous of the Aussies to give Sir Fred such a fine eulogy.

Trueman was the best quick, we ever produced. Unplayable in England.
Davo was no slouch either. 150 wickets, at 20.5
England and Aussie XI, the pair of them.

As a Glasgow schoolboy in the 1950s, I can bizarrely name 9 of these England players. There was a lot of cricket on TV in those days.

Mr. Trueman was a master of his craft. Had he played as many Tests as they do these days, he would have passed 1,000 wickets for sure. He could bat a bit, as well.
I'm not from Yorkshire, but he certainly did that famous County proud.

He was not just the first England bowler to take 300 wickets, he was the first bowler full stop.

Great bowler...as an 11 year old saw him clean up Richardson...Watson...graveney in one over.MCG 1958...

Fred Trueman based his action on that of Ray Lindwall. Ray Lindwall based his action on that of Harold Larwood. Three tremendous giants of fast bowling.

Truman and Statham, were regarded as a one of the finest pace attack pair. I heard ,that Truman used to tell Statham, guy all your wickets are mine, they can't plsy me and try to hit and get out. Perhsps Truman was the first bowler to crocc 300 wickets mark. Statham took 268 wickets.

Stupid England selectors dropped Fred years before his use by date. He could have gotten way more wickets and England would have won many more test matches.

It was 307 wickets........Lance Gibbs took 309

Though a great fast bowler Trueman was a prejudiced person in private and full of vanity.Once he became a cricket commentator his racism and egotism came out openly. When he played for Yorkshire no immigrant even if born in Yorkshire could get into the county team.I saw him in 1968 when he played for Yorkshire against MCC at Lord’s.For two three overs with the new ball he was genuinely quick…would have been very quick in his hey days.
