Lillian Board was one of the brightest stars British athletics had ever produced. An Olympic silver medallist, double European champion and world-record-breaking relay runner, she seemed destined for even greater glory.

But at only 21, persistent illness led to a devastating diagnosis of terminal bowel cancer. What followed was a heartbreaking battle that took her from Britain to controversial treatment in West Germany and ultimately to a Munich hospital, where she died at just 22.

I absolutely remember her, I was a (young) rabid athletics fan in the west of Ireland and her death shocked us to the core. RIP gorgeous girl....

I've always remembered Lillian because I couldn' t believe,as a naive young man who hadnt grown up with any form of tragedy in my own life that this super athlete could succumb to a deadly cancer. So,so sad.

I never forgot Lillian Board. She was my inspiration from such an early age to compete in sport and she gave me my first memories of winning GB Olympic medals. I hope her family know that she touched many peoples lives and is most definitely still revered and not forgotten .

It's astonishing how little Lillian Board is mentioned in any form of media. Even in the 1980s it was as though she had never existed. I only heard about her through the book Lillian written by her fiancée which I read as a ten year old. It's had a lifelong effect on me. Lillian's death was truly awful and tragic and it always makes me feel sad when I think of her.

1968 and the first time I swore in front of my Dad when Lillian took silver .
Lillian the first person I didn't know that I cried for when the news came that she had died.
Today my kids know who she is because I tell them that I loved Lillian and still do .
