The original artist and songwriter of "A Message to You, Rudy" was Jamaican musician Dandy Livingstone, who recorded the song in 1967 under the title "Rudy, a Message to You". The song was a hit in British Caribbean communities and later achieved wider success when the ska band The Specials covered it in 1979.
This was the start of the SKA revival in the UK in the late 1970s
In Jamaica, a "rude boy" (or "rudie" / "rudy") refers to a member of a 1960s subculture of young, working-class, and often delinquent men who responded to poverty and unemployment with a defiant, tough image and an interest in ska and rocksteady music. The term spread to Britain, where it was associated with the two-tone ska revival and could describe either a delinquent youth or, later, a fan of the music who adopted the stylish, suited image of the Jamaican original.

Being a 56 year old Skinhead (the decent reggae loving type) I've had the pleasure of meeting all but 2 of the band. Really nice blokes 😊

Rudy = Rude boy is a subculture that originated from 1960s Jamaican street culture.[1] In the late 1970s, there was a revival in England of the terms rude boy and rude girl, among other variations like rudeboy and rudebwoy, being used to describe fans of two-tone and ska. This revival of the subculture and term was partially the result of Jamaican immigration to the UK and the so-called "Windrush" generation. The use of these terms moved into the more contemporary ska punk movement as well. In the UK and especially Jamaica, the terms rude boy and rude girl are used in a way similar to gangsta, yardie, or badman

Terry Hall was the lead singer(man in the middle) of the Specials,he was great but sadly he later became addicted to the Valium he had been prescribed. Following a suicide attempt in 2004, Terry was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.he died on 18 December 2022 from pancreatic cancer, at the age of 63. RIP Terry

People assume Ska music originated from London but it originated from Coventry in the West Midlands of England in the late 1970s, It followed on from the first ska music that developed in Jamaica in the 1950s and 1960s. Punk and skinheads were huge in the mid to early 80's. The Specials, Bad Manners and Madness are all British ska bands and the most popular, but there are more. Gwen Stefani and No Doubt were Inspired by British ska bands like Madness, The English Beat, and The Specials. Check them out, you'll love them.

There is still a 2 tone/ska movement here in the UK, and The Specials are still ranked highly. Unity is a great premise so great choice guys.

Welcome to the world of 2 tone / SKA. Now please do Ghost Town by the Specials. One of the best songs from the 80's.

People have already said, this is a conver of a jamacan reggae song by Dandy Livingstone in 1967. The guy playing the trombone on this 1979 version is Rico Rodriguez, who also played the trombone on the original song. Fun fact: Elvis Costello produced this single.

This song holds great significance to me as lifelong fan. I once visited Harrogate in North Yorkshire when my son was small. A four piece brass band was raising money for charity and playing music. I am Rasta which is clearly visible. Every time we passed them whilst exploring the town the lads playing stopped their current music piece and played this time as my soundtrack. Great memory, great tune.
