Madness had a reputation for being seven young lads from North London mucking about and making daft videos, but underlying it all they are fine musicians and almost single-handedly got an entire generation of young British men dancing. And they're still going and playing to huge, adoring crowds at festivals

"I wear a fez now. Fezzes are cool!" Dr Who

I'm from the UK, hit both my teens and 20's in the 80's. For me, if I am standing near a dance area, drink in hand, and hear that opening horn,  I know I have about 3 seconds to down or abandon that drink as all hell is about to break out on the dancefloor and that drink will NOT survive.  I was at a festival and they were playing a (not so) secret gig there. Suddenly I hear people going Da da DADA Da to the opening riff like quarter a mile away, around me almost everyone joined in!
This is 2-Tone. Madness were unusual for the scene as they were not a mixed race band, they had simply grown up cheek by jowel with a black community, raised on a musical diet of calypso, early Ska like Desmond Decker and Jimmy Cliff and other Jamaican and Barbadian music drifting over from their neighbours houses. And they have always paid respect to those artists. I mean they took their name from a Prince Buster Song among other things.

There's no other way than to be entertained or amused. Thank you.

Danceable. This song makes you move.

Great!
At last, a reactor with class, who listens to the track right through before giving us his thoughts on what he th felt, thus allowing the rest of us to keep him company on his journey and leaving the groove intact.
Thanks, mate, you have this viewer's respect.
Excellent choice.  :face-orange-raised-eyebrow:

Love this song so much!
And appreciate your approach to let the video run first and analyse later.

If all the members of Monty Python were musicians, they would have sounded like this! Just great fun!

The best review ever. Love how you've joined in the spirit of the whole mad thing

TWO-TONE brother.
Baggy Trousers; House of Fun; Embarrassment; Our House - and on and on and on (not just with Madness).
The sound of my early 80s British childhood was rich indeed, thanks to these nutters ;)
And then there were The Specials, Bad Manners, The Selector and The Beat to consider, among many other long-forgotten others from that great British scene. It didn't last long, but it made a massive contribution to all music (and to British culture) forever.
To me, because I was sort of there I suppose, it's still "important"!

Beside the fun, ska sounds, the thing that tends to define Madness more than anything is their ability to record songs with a story or a message. Yes, they do have their bonkers moments, but it's really worth listening to some of their more down-beat tunes, such as 'Grey Day' (depression), 'One Better Day' (homelessness), 'Embarrassment' (mixed-race relationships), or their final single before reuniting, '(Waiting for) The Ghost Train' (Apartheid in South Africa).

Best fun take on Britain's Imperial past I can remember.........

The nutty boys from Camden - such fun ... I had a lot of their singles in my collection.

Love Madness, the soundtrack to my childhood. Skinheads having fun. Who'd of thought.

In the 1980's most British "pop" records were 3 minute wonders. If your song was over that the pop (popular) stations would not play it.

They are part of 2 tone movement, with other great bands as the specials, the selecter, etc................
Please you must to hear the rest of their great songs as baggy trousers, grey day, it must be love, house of fun, driving in my car, our house, wings of a dove, the sun and the rain and specially their legendary album one step beyond; because madness needs more recognition in their great u.s.a........................

Or hate? what was he on to say that? ONE of the best British bands there has ever been, they did or still do hold the record for the most consecutive top 40 hits in the UK with 23 on the trot, 26 if you count 3 re-releases. And still regularly tour to large venues and audiences.

Hi Jone.  I'm really glad you enjoyed this suggestion.  While I have been a fan of Madness right from the beginning I do know that not everyone loves them and that they haven't enjoyed just the same level of sustained success  in the US that they have done in the UK.  But I figured that if you liked 'Night Boat to Cairo' you would probably like a lot of their music.  So, all being well I hope to suggest more from them in the new year.  Glad you enjoyed this.
