Luke Skywalker rebuilt the Jedi Order after the fall of the Empire, but unlike the Jedi before him, there was no Council above him and almost no real oversight.
In this video, we look at how Luke built his new Jedi Order, the enormous authority he held, how Legends handled characters like Kyp Durron and the Sun Crusher, and how similar problems eventually appeared in canon with Ben Solo and the destruction of Luke’s temple.

Long story short, the Expanded Universe, (very) flawed though it could be at times, was vastly superior to Disney's bullshit. The EU at least got the themes (mostly) right and didn't completely butcher the heart of its best characters. I could turn this into a kriffing book, but, sticking with the topic:
Expanded Universe: Luke sees potential in a flawed man who got corrupted by one of the most powerful Sith Lords in galactic history, and a world pays the price for his mistake. Luke, being the de facto scion of the Light, chooses mercy. One can and should question his judgment all day long, but he remains consistent though flawed himself. His idealism is simultaneously his greatest strength and his greatest weakness. This makes him a compelling character.
Disney Canon: Luke has nightmares about Ben turning to the Dark Side, but, instead of going after the source (Snoke) or peacefully confronting Ben, Luke decides to merc his nephew in his sleep, and five worlds paid the price. Yeah, he ultimately backs down, but the thought never should have crossed his mind to begin with. This is a man who put his very soul (and arguably the Rebellion) on the line to redeem his father. Years later, he has a few bad dreams and decided cold blooded murder is the best option? Disney's desire to subvert (government name: shit all over) everything that had been established up to that point completely butchered one of modern fiction's greatest heroes. And then the Kennedy regime had to twist the knife even more by turning him into a clumsy, reclusive hermit who turned his back on his sister, his brother-in-law, and his friends (nevermind turning Han into a deadbeat dad and Leia into the den mother for La Resistance (government name: the dime-store Rebellion).
Oh, and Luke's crystal was a green synthetic created from notes he found in Obi-Wan's home on Tatooine. Kriff this stupid kyber crystal horse shit. //endrant
