It's crazy how everyone who sits down to write a book is inherently incapable of understanding numbers. 25,000 people in a space age setting is nothing.

Considering what the Vong struggled with later in the war, and the reason they ultimately lose, The Battle of Coruscant doomed them. They suffer SOOO many casualties taking the planet that they basically depleted their reserves of warriors.

It made no sense that they chose the most METAL planet for a JUNGLE planet... there were soo many almost there options...

Surprised you didn't do (an albeit limited one considering I just went through Star by Star and Dark Journey) a small breakdown of the fleet numbers present.
From Star by Star:
The New Republic had half its space navy under Supreme Commander Sien Sovv divided between three Fleet Groups:
Fleet Group One under Admiral Traest Kre'fey
Fleet Group Two under General Garm Bel Iblis, commanding from the Star Destroyer Bail Organa
Fleet Group Three under General Wedge Antilles, commanding from the Imperial-class Star Destroyer Mon Mothma
Orbital defence platforms and space mines overseen from Orbital Defence Headquarters under General Ba'tra
Coruscant Planetary Defence Force led by General Carlist Rieekan that oversaw the atmospheric fighters and turbolasers across Coruscant
Along with a steady stream of reinforcements (there was a rumour early on that retired Admiral Gial Ackbar was coming with a fleet from distant Mon Calamari).
The Jedi task force consisting of 72 T-65XJ3 X-wing starfighters and 8 blastboats divided into four squadrons - Saber Squadron under Luke Skywalker with Mara Jade Skywalker and Tam Azur-Jamin, Shocker Squadron under Rigard Matl, Kyp's Dozen under Kyp Durron and the Wild Knights under Saba Sebatyne with Danni Quee and Izal Waz aboard her blastboat as well as Drif Lij in an X-wing.
The fleet itself consisted of Star Destroyers (such as Bail Organa (class unidentified) and the Mon Mothma (an Imperial-class with Interdictor technology minus the domes), cruisers (such as a kilometer-long KDY battle cruiser), frigates, corvettes and starfighters. Atmospheric fighters included V-wing airspeeders and I-7 Howlrunners.
On Coruscant, caught up in the chaos of evacuating were Han Solo, Leia Organa Solo, 4-month-old Ben Skywalker, C-3PO, YVH 1-507A, a TDL nanny droid and the Noghri bodyguards Adarakh and Meelwalh. A brief encounter with the treacherous Senator Viqi Shesh of Kuat saw Han, Leia, Threepio, Meelwahl and 12-year-old Dab Hantaq (under the alias Tarc Kether) ultimately make their way on the Millennium Falcon from Eastport to the Imperial Palace where Leia would give her speech on Borsk's behalf before the Falcon (now crewed by evacuees from the Palace Security) to rescue a downed Luke, Mara and R2-D2 from a tower before fleeing the planet. Threepio and Ben would end up on the star ferry Byrt, pursued and almost captured by Shesh. Lando Calrissian himself was also present with several YVH-1 droids such as YVH 1-1A, YVH 1-24A, YVH 1-25A and YVH 1-302A. He and Ba'tra would jointly command the space mines action, albeit despite giving massive casualties to the Vong ultimately aided in the collapsing of the shields but it did cause significant losses to the Vong they'd never recover, before taking the Lady Luck to rescue Threepio and Ben and liberate the Byrt from Yuuzhan Vong control and get it to the rendezvous point with the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer Errant Venture, arriving from Eclipse with the remainder of Kyp's Dozen and Cilghal with a prototype yammosk jammer. Tendra Risant Calrissian was also present dropping off YVH-1 droids before making it to to the planned rendezvous.
Yuuzhan Vong:
A large assault fleet led by Warmaster Tsavong Lah himself.
It consisted of a mixture of destroyer analogs (such as the Sunulok), cruiser analogs (such as the Kratak), heavy cruiser analogs (two of which were carrying two of the four yammosk war coordinators), carrier analogs, frigate analogs (such as the Reaver, the first enemy ship to open fire in the battle), corvette analogs, Coralskippers, air skiffs, blastboat analogs and dropship analogs (including one that was a kilometer-long and fell to concussion missiles launched by the Millennium Falcon during their rescue of Luke, Mara, Artoo and trapped New Republic soldiers at a turbolaser turret) as well as approximately 600 captured refugee ships from Ralltiir and Rhinnal - themselves a mixture of starliners, mass transports and converted freighters - that were used as shield ships to prevent New Republic ships from having any affect on the Yuuzhan Vong fleet itself. Ships included the Happy Hutt, Meteor Racer and the starliner Swift Dreams.
The ships had around 2 to 3 million sentients aboard and were either destroyed against the shield or fell to the fire of Bel Iblis' ships when Fleet Group Two and most of Fleet Group One (leaving Kre'fey with only a few thousand ships) defied Sovv's orders to hold fire and not butcher their own people even at the cost of Coruscant (to which Fey'lya tried to relief the Sullustan of command only for most of the Senate and many flag officers such as Kre'fey, Rieekan, Commodore Brand, Admiral Rabb, General Yeel, General Muun and Commander Godt to protest openly).
Ultimately by the time the Yuuzhan Vong made it from the Obo Rin Comet Cluster at the edge of the system to Coruscant itself, it lost half its ships and many more would perish thanks to space mines and colliding with the shield itself. Fey'lya's bomb took out three dropships, at least twenty airskiffs and 25,000 Yuuzhan Vong warriors alone including Commander Romm Zqar, head of the drop. Ships lost included the heavy cruiser analog carrying the first yammosk, Sunulok and its four escorting frigate analogs (Lah himself had moved to the Kratak) and a frigate analog and a corvette analog downed by Luke and Mara before they fell out of orbit and crashed into the Western Sea.
That's what I got from Star by Star :)
Hope that helps.
