What to look for when buying a used single barrel break action shotgun.
Stevens Model 107B.

Gunsmithing and restoring old firearms is a lot of fun and challenging. It can also be dangerous to you or bystanders if proper function checks and safety protocols are not followed.

hell the typical old single barrel where i live is around 140

At that price i would buy all they have if they have good solid lock ups and no serious problems.thecolder guns made out of solid steel and wood are way better than the new ones made of plastic and designed to break after so long. The old stuff was built to last multiple lifetimes

A few weeks ago I found a 16 gauge model. The "selected forged steel " is stamped upside down. I bought it for $125 . Cleaned up nicely. Goes bang every time.

Pretty reliable guns but they do tend to need new ejector springs but besides that they are solid

they went away from the 'Stevens' butt plate a long long time ago, that is the correct plate.. for the 'cheap' models.. i.e. stevens, springfield and all the store brands.. NOT Savages tho they have named buttplates...

I found one in 20 gauge at a pawn
shop. It had a little surface rust on the hammer and around the chamber area.
The Bore was good and so was the wood.
I got it for $75. A minutes rubbing with an oily rag and the rust was gone.
Your comments apply to buying any used gun.
Thanks for the video.

The very first thing I check is the condition of the bore if the inside of the barrel is badly pitted I let it go I also check that it's on the face. Only then do I worry about how pretty it is.

Use a copper or bronze wire brush instead of steel wool, you can damage the bluing with steel wool… excellent video and just trying to help from beautiful Kentucky

One way to look at it is what are you going to get for $75 that's made to day to the same quality standards as that old Stevens?
Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
A little elbow grease and with a clean-up you've got one fine servicable shotgun that will last for decades. Not a bad deal at all for less than a C-note! l.
