5:36 them sleeping vertically is some kind of alien shit

It really shows how goated mammals are. The ruler of the ocean doesn't even have gills.

Sleeping vertically in the dark ocean like floating obelisks is the most alien thing any mammal has ever done.

Orcas: “We hunt Great White Sharks! We’re the most deadly predator in the sea!”

Sperm Whale: *taps shoulder*

1:36 Fun fact, they used to get even larger just a few centuries ago. Nowadays bull sperm whales only reach around 50 to 60 feet in length, but in the 1800s before the pressures of commercial whaling bulls could reach anywhere from 60 to even 70 feet in length on average. And regarding the reports of the Essex survivors (the real whale attack story that inspired the book Moby Dick) they estimated the whale that attacked them was 80 to 85 feet in length. Meaning he was a true giant.

side note but blob fish has to be the wildest name given to a species. ik its not the scientific name but still.
it would be like an astronaut accidentally dying in space, and an alien finds the gory mess and names our species “explody guts monkey”

Who named this animal

So you're telling me that a Sperm Whale is like an alien invasion for colossal squids.

Descends from above, has advanced tech that renders your best useless, kills you, absolutely nothing you can do about it

"no animal can tolerate deep-sea pressures, while also being able to live in the top layers of the ocean, and hunt huge apex predators like the colossal squid."

"with the sole exception of the sperm whale of course"

Their lower jaw is so damn skinny. I get it’s the size of a bus, but compared to their head … It’s just so skinny compared to the rest of its body. It’s very bizarre

Amazing move, YouTube, cutting off a piece of the notification so the title be "Why the Entire Ocean is terrified of Sperm..."

11:53 the squids aren't really "losing" the evolutionary arms race, the win condition for a species isn't to not get eaten, it's to reproduce faster than you get eaten
and the mere fact the giant squid still exists is proof they've been successful

And then we turned them into lamp oil.

But then something even more terrifying came and turned these apex predators into lamp oil, The Mankind.

Oh great, new fear unlocked. Being soundwaved to death by a whale…

Everyone loves Megalodons but we got them right here. They were both around at the same time to.

5x larger than the human brain seems really small. I was expecting the brain to weigh as much as a car.

There is only one rival. Humanity hunted them with harpoons and sailing ships, which seems insane, but was done with great reliability and success.

Also, they will not attack humans unless attacked themselves.

If meeting on good terms, they immediately understand how weak we are, that we are also intelligent, and can see the positioning of our innards clear as day.

They can unintentionally cause discomfort, and so they are ALWAYS dangerous to swim with, but it is not because they want to hurt you. If they wanted to, you'd be wailed immediately with a sonic cannon and dead as a doornail.

they did the math for the population of colossal squids based on what they observed in sperm whale stomachs and estimated theres MILLIONS of giant and colossal squids to sustain the number of sperm whales that exist, the reason its so hard for us to observe them is because theyre super light sensitive, and every sub we send down has giant white lights on it
