I really hate the phrase “A tree died for nothing” as I do believe almost any written work has some form of value but seeing the length of some of drake’s poems angers me so much that the first thing that came to my mind was “a tree died for this?”

I get this sense from a lot of celebrity poetry collections (and a little bit in Jacob Jones's collection too, though I think it's a bit more self-deprecating and self-aware there), but most of all from this collection, that so many of these people took only two ideas about poetry from their high school English classes: that poetry doesn't have to follow rules, and that a poem can be startlingly brief and still be complete. These ideas by themselves are completely true, but instead of taking them as opportunities to experiment with language and explore the effective use of brevity, they take them as license to do the absolute bare minimum and defend it as just as valid as any other poetry out there. It betrays not only a shallowness of understanding of poetry as an art form, but also a deep disdain for poetry and for those who practice it in earnest.

I don't think this is actually a book of poetry. It's an aesthetic object that is meant to enhance the aesthetic experience of listening to Drake's album For All The Dogs. Calling it a poetry collection is just Drake's ego.

These are all failed epigrams. This may have been seen as bold and irreverent if it was a cryptic website back in 2005, but there is nothing novel about this tone now. We're inundated with text like this all day every day.

Started my creative writing class this semester and one of the goals my prof put in the syllabus is “to produce a publishable literary work” and well… if this is the stuff getting published then the bar must be lower than drake’s opinions on women
