Curry Barker's Obsession looks like a supernatural horror movie about a cursed wish, but It's actually a horror movie about entitlement. It shows us what happens when a guy convinces himself that wanting someone enough gives him a claim to them.
In this video essay, I break down how Obsession takes the "Nice Guy" archetype and turns him into the villain (yes a villian!) of his own horror movie. We'll get into consent, entitlement, the psychology of denial, and why this film's fear of AI companionship might be the most honest horror premise of the decade.
If you've seen my Nice Guy series or my video on Joe Goldberg and YOU, this one picks up right where those left off.

he is unaware that she is estranged from her father, even though they’ve been friends for years; he shows no empathy for her situation—and this was long before the whole "wish" business—when she opens up to him about her work.
He never bought her the necklace, nor did he grant her the wish.
He couldn't care less about her consent.
He isn’t in love with her; he loves the idea he has of her.
In real life, I’m certain that in 90% of cases, this "nice guy" would have turned out to be a coward too, and would have "unalive" Nikki the moment she became even the slightest bit of an inconvenience to him.
