Something I'm sad they didn't try harder to capture with the set design was that this arena was supposed to be an old football stadium and the pillar that everyone is fighting on/hanging from is the field goal post. It was so subtly described in the book you can easily miss it, but it always felt so much more dystopian knowing a sports arena from "our time" was turned into a gladiator arena for kids.

“I couldn’t have killed them all for nothing…”
That hits so hard because she knows it wasn’t fair for anyone, not even herself.

Bro finding out that this wasn’t just Lucy randomly singing or her attempt at calming the snakes, but that it was a traditional Covey FUNERAL song?? And that if the Covey were watching they were probably singing along with her

“Sing your way out of this one, Lucy Gray”

And oh boy, did she!

What's interesting is that Lucy knew the snakes weren't responding to her singing. She was just acting her ass of to see if they would let her out 😂

This scene really shows how evil the Games really are. Reaper died trying to protect the innocent and failed. He accepted his death with dignity. He was the real one.

It's the lyrics of the song for me. The defiant refusal to accept defeat. She looks right into the eyes of the people who want her gone, and says, "I refuse to go until I'm ready".

‘Why aren’t they attacking her”

“MuSt bE tHE SiNgInG”

7:00 for just that second, the Capitol students rebelled to save a victor. It really must be a fragile system if it can be threatened by a songbird

As a Mexican I find it fascinating that they gave Lucy a skirt of snakes. In Aztec mythology there's a goddess named Coatlicue who was represented wearing a skirt of snakes. And coincidentally, she's the mother of the Aztec god of war.

I love what this teachers us about Snow. People love a symbol, this symbol is all that matters, not who it is or what they do. Snow recognized they were using Katniss as one all those years later because HE used Lucy as one in his youth. He knew what was coming and tried to stop it. . .he was just too late.

For all of you saying “This proves Snow was good” go read the book and listen to his internal dialogue he basically wanted to OWN lucy…

"The song is calming the snakes" proceeds to double down singing louder and more abrasively. A calming siren like song for sure. 😅

"can we go home now? please?" poor wovey

She won and they were still gonna kill her, that's fucked up

Lucy-Gray was always the snake. A snake always wears their hearts on their sleeves,  a snake hides and waits to strike, a snake is peaceful when unbothered and dangerous when provoked

Snow was always the song bird, always using his bright colors to hide a more sinister nature, always singing to the one who can get him the most power.

"When I'm pure like a dove, when I've learned how to love" hits differently after SOTR

Honey...what type of rats do they have in Panem, cause that's a strong ahh rat poison 💀

seeing this after all the snow white stuff. Disney truly tried their hardest to make rachel look awful. She was singing like an angel in hunger games.

I was a bit bummed they changed how the win went in the movie. I may be remembering it wrong or missing it in the scene, but Lucy gray kills three people in the arena, making the Hanging Tree song work on three levels. She killed two people with poison and another with snakes, three total. Snow kills three people total, so while the hanging tree song was about the man hung for the mining rebel attack, in truth, it's about both Lucy Gray and Snow. And how they were both murderers, but very different reasons and motivations
