the whole 32 year war took just over 100,000 Lives and this battle alone accounts for 15,000+ of those deaths

They must have made them tough in those days! Edward IV was only about 19 years old on that day and unusually tall for those times at around 6’3”

I visited Towton one fine May evening in the early 1980s. The birds were singing and it all seemed like a peaceful middle of nowhere. It was hard to imagine that England's biggest battle took place there in 1461!

Up to 20,000 dead… Imagine the story of those who survived, on both sides, but with bad wounds. No Medical Corps to carry you away, or hospitals to help you recover. They staggered or crawled away and are totally reliant on friends that might help. Many with broken bones, head & chest injuries or deep cuts to the face and limbs would have infected wounds, dying slowly of sepsis, gangrene and blood loss. Then how many would never be able to work properly again, dying in poverty and pain.
But for the new King… it’s great victory! 12:00 Fact is Edward IV - or any King - gave no thought at all about those men. The common soldier was entirely disposable, the King or Govt had absolutely no responsibility for their care, even those fighting for Edward. At the end, they would have been everywhere, but he would have just rode away. Long Live The King… 😐. And of course, there was no one to write down their stories, they weren't important enough.

Lancastrians - Supported Henry VI
He was not a 100% and so Richard Duke of York was appointed protector of the Realm
Henry VI was married to Margaret of Anjou and her concern was that her son Edward of Westminster remained the heir .

House of York - unmarried Edward IV was supported by the Earl of Warwick , Richard Neville - the King Maker .
.
Edward IV would later marry Elizabeth Woodville in secret . This led to a conflict between him and Richard Neville .

1-2 percent of the English population are believed by some modern historians to have died during this battle.

I actually was in the biggest battle on British soil when I was about 8 with a big stick and killing all the summer ferns that in my head were little soldiers, I killed hundreds and thousands of the buggers

@AnthonyTobyEllenor-pi4jq 2 months ago

Reports from after the battle mention all the Lancastrian blood fertilized the soil.

I'm loving the comments from the table top experts. Have they took into account the conditions? , i suppose they'd have used their drones and mobile phones to assess developments.

How did they differentiate friends and foes during battles? It seems like battles were a free for all!

4:24 The sunny weather in the game footage is a probably a bit misleading. From what I've read (Goodwin: "Fatal Colours", p. 216), the weather was miserable - a storm with snow and sleet, with terrible visibility, leading to the Lancastrian archers not even realising they had missed their marks.
