The Battle of Flodden, Flodden Field, or Branxton Hill was fought on 9 September 1513 between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland as part of the War of the League of Cambrai. The battle was fought near Branxton, in the county of Northumberland, in northern England, between an invading Scots army under King James IV and an English army commanded by the Earl of Surrey. In terms of troop numbers, it was the largest battle ever fought between the two kingdoms.

Interesting that Bannockburn has a large visitor centre and is a major attraction, Flodden has a sign in a small car park.

The English have always been known for their prowess with artillery and bowmen

My wife and I walked the ground last year, the battlefield is well marked and signage tells the story really well. It gives the visitor a good perspective of the challenge.

Scotland always started more fights against England but mostly came off worst.

The bill was developed from agricultural tools meant for maintaining hedgerows, and a pike line is basically a spicy hedge.

Flowers Of The Forest - a lament for the Scottish fallen. Still played at military funerals.

My son in law is called Home. His father who grew up in Edinburgh pronounces their surname as Hume.

My 15th great grandfather Sir Christopher Savage died in this battle holding one of the English flanks while leading his men from his town.

Tactics vs environment - always critical to any battle's outcome.

When you visit the battlefield, from the English lines you can see immediately how the Scots became unstuck (or rather - stuck) and were butchered.

The helmet worn by Thomas Howard the then Earl of Surrey at this battle is displayed in St Michaels Church Framlingham Suffolk, known at the Flodden Helm. The chancel is a mausoleum to the Howard Dukes of Norfolk.

the ol' "you like that defence? stay there then" tactic.

This was the best Scottish host they ever assembled, gunpowder, modern weapons and armour and modern tactics.a lot of money was invested into King James's army. In hindsight going with pikes probably wasn't the best idea given the lack of time they had to practice and train with them.

Interestingly it was Queen Catherine of Aragon who helped raise the English force because her husband Henry was away on campaign in France. Her role in this often gets overlooked.

The aftermath of this battle was a disaster for Scotland, they would never invade England again (unless you include the Jacobite rebellion as 'Scotish') and they were forced into humiliating terms which included absolving the old alliance with France.
