One of the battles where you can say the debut of the european knight took place. Paladins had been good precursors, Normans were setting the stage, but now the holy roman empire fielded their heavy elite cavalry as well. Which would become the deadliest units of war in the world for over half a milennia, training rigorously since age 7 in all manner of warfare and riding, and winning incredible victories for centuries to come like Cerami, Hastings, Ascalon, Mont Gisard etc. This battle also shows that knights could deal perfectly well with horse archers, which they did during other battles as well like Artah 1105 AD.

I'm from Magdeburg, where the burial site of Otto the Great is located. The city even calls itself Ottostadt, so thank you for covering this battle, really cool to see it in such a vivid way. Greetings from Germany ❤

Entering the crypt in Worms cathedral I saw the insprictpion: " Conrad the Red † 955 ". I already knew that date, but have never seen such a detailed explaination what happened in Lechfeld. Duke Conrad was killed in the battle when an arrow pierced his throat and killed him instantly. The burial in Worms accompanied by King Otto was a privilige, given to him for his bravery in battle. His stone sarcophagus containing his mortal remains is still preserved in the crypt in Worms.

What is amazing in history is that a few centuries later it was the Magyar's descendants who struggled against horse archer hordes themselves. They did eventually overcome them too.

What I am amazed at is how the German infantry in the centre held whilst their own cavalry withdrew on their flanks and then the Hungarian cavalry streamed past their flanks , considering most of the foot would not be professional soldiers and would probably not be in the know what was happening, pretty sure they didn’t have briefings for the ordinary blokes and orders during a battle were in that period tricky .
How the centre didn’t break I can never get over , Otto must have had some nerve to try that manoeuvre.
Great video and one of my favourite battles.

Otto the First and Konrad the Red, ancestral heroes & patriots. Got it. 🤗 May their souls rest in the paradise they earned for themselves!

I misspelled “Maygar” instead of “Magyar” 😅. This is what happens when you don’t rewatch your own video at least 5-6 times before posting it…

Two important points which weren't mentioned: Firstly, heavy, persistent rain set in during the battle, rendering the Hungarian composite bow virtually useless. Secondly, Otto ensured that the Hungarians’ retreat turned into a panicked flight and that not a single warrior would return home – not just their leaders. The armoured horsemen slaughtered most enemies right there on the battlefield, but many also drowned in the swollen River Lech, whilst many more stragglers were cut down by peasant militias who too had to settle an account.

aaaand as it is so often, the important bits are left out.

Otto had placed small forces everywhere on retreat routes of the magyars. Every river crossing. Every pass. Very few magyars made it back. Being cut down whereever they fled.

I always thought this battle and it's prologue could be absolute fire material for a movie. Just think about Conrad unexpectedly showing up to aid his old friend Otto after they once had become enemies and Conrad even supporting a rebellion against Otto. And then he paid with his life to revive their friendship. It's a bit like Theoden's death in Lord of the Rings.

According to Hungarian legends, Chieftain Lehel struck Conrad dead with his horn.
After Chieftains Bulcsú and Lehel were captured, Lehel’s final wish was to blow his horn one last time. Having blown the horn, he lunged at Conrad and struck him a blow that proved fatal.
The chieftains were hanged, and all the warriors were killed, save for seven.
These seven were blinded and sent home to spread the news of the defeat.
Interestingly, a horn is preserved to this day in the Hungarian town of Jászberény—attributed to Chieftain Lehel—which bears a crack said to have resulted from that blow to the head.

I watch every video about the Lechfeld since I did my family tree. I found the dynasty of the Von Heerwart 10 generations deep in my family tree. The Von Heerwart got ennobled because a Heerwart led the sortie of Augsburg's militia, that attacked the rear of the Hungarians.

His grandson married into royalty and that's how I am related to basically ever European king that started his dynasty more than 1000 years ago.

And I only know about it because this one militia guy from 1200 years ago became ennobled for his bravery at Lechfeld.

This was a good video, you definitely know your history. Could you make more Reconquista videos?

Later the Hungarians were facing the same problem with the Mongols, only from the other side now, and solved the problem the same way as the Germans did with them. Strong fortified towns and heavy cavalry.
