There's a story about an old woman who was asked what she thought about the US soldiers in the UK. She apparently said that she found them polite and well mannered but she didn't like the white ones that they had brought with them!

NEVER tell an english pub landlord who he can serve...lol. great reaction as always

love that this story of Bamber Bridge is getting a wider audience.

You can research about Jesse Owens. The global superstar of the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Berlin. He was treated worse by his own President back home, who never even congratulated him, than he was Hitler and his fascist regime. When attending a ceremony for his great performance in a luxuty Hotel in New York, he had to use the back entrance and freight elevator, while having been free to be a normal guest in mixed Hotels in Nazi Germany.

And how bad does a society have to be, when you are more racist than Nazi Germany (at least at that moment in time)?!

Josephine Baker, an entertainer, became very popular in France. She worked for the Resistance during the war and was awarded the Croix de Guerre by France.
She was given a State Funeral. Thousands attended.
Once, when she returned to the US for a visit, she was not permitted to enter the front door of the theatre, or hotel. She had to enter via the kitchen.

It was British civilians that stuck up for the soldiers whatever colour they happened to be or which country they came from. Only the US military were discriminating against their own soldiers.

Many black GI’s moved to Britain after the war!  The farm my father worked on back in the 60’s had a black American GI working there, my dad and he became GREAT friends.  He told my father that after the war he went back to America and told his family, we are moving to Britain.

Apparently the WHOLE family worked non stop for the next 10 years, saving every penny they could to move here and buy a home. Grandma, mum and dad and the two sons who had returned from war.. first they lived in London but then in the early sixties they moved down here to Cornwall and fell in love with the place.

Well done, so glad you followed this up and gave this incident proper context. Absolutely incomprehensible that not only did this happen but worse was to come when these brave and loyal people who survived the war returned home to find nothing had changed for them. Thank you

It wasn't just the UK. USA troops got into fights with local troops in New Zealand and Australia over similar causes.

The New Zealand riot was started by southern USA troops trying to prevent Maori troops buying drinks in the Allied Service Club in Wellington. That went into history as the Battle of Manners Street.

In Australia, there was the Battle of Brisbane. While not specifically about race relations, that was part of the general disagreements between the USA and Australian soldiers which led up to the pitched battle in the streets of the city.

Generally, the attitudes of US Army military police were widely resented by other allies, as well as their attempts to impose US laws and attitudes on other countries.

Britain had already gone through the Battle of Britain and the terrifying bombing of the Blitz, the last thing we needed was so-called Allies carrying on this behaviour on our soil.

While over here we call it the "Battle of Bamber Bridge" ... calling it an incident makes it sound less than it was

Thank you to these wonderful 'coloured' soldiers who after finding out about my very premature birth (28 weeks) wrote home to their mothers who made tiny dolls clothes for me and sent over gifts, not only for my family but also other families in our village.
A few of our young women wanted to be GI brides to these young men but could not because of segregation.

After this incident and others like it, a film was made explaining to Americans that in the UK, Black people were treated as equals.

From Gregor, Tranmere, UK:-
My mum used to dance with Black US Service men and West Indian Essential workers, during World War II, at local dances.
She used to say that the locals were thankful for their service in helping Britain and helping the fight against the Fascists.
She said that many of the White American Servicemen hated the free mixing and socialising of 'races' and held vile views.
I have never heard either of my parents ever use a racial slur.
My Dad's ship visit Allied occupied Naples in the war and my Dad, always a keen music fan, was looking to see if there was any good jazz music being played by American Service men.
Instead he was caught up in a vile, violent race riot between white and black American troops. He would not elaborate on the subject other than to say he was disgusted.
Both Mum and Dad are dead now.
Wonderful people.

This needs to be made as a realistic movie.

A little bit of pride in my country men.

I knew of this story; my grandad told me about it and why it's important to stand up against discrimination in any form and whenever you see it. ✊️

Imagine being a local in Bamber Bridge, hearing that the American military leadership had demanded segregation be imposed, then going to the pub and seeing the BLACK TROOPS ONLY signs. You would have 😂 and felt so proud of your town!

As a dual UK citizen, born just a few miles from Bamber Bridge, I am shocked at the amount of racism still prevalent in the USA. Racism exists everywhere, but my grandparents confirmed how much the black American troops were appreciated during the war in Britain. They were helping us fight a common enemy after all, so why would we not welcome them? The people of Lancashire were important in bringing an end to the West African slave trade. That part of England was the powerhouse of textile manufacturing for the world and they refused to accept any cotton produced by slave labour from the US. It makes me proud to be Lancastrian. I'm also deeply saddened that racism is getting worse in the USA since Maga made it part of their ethos.
