I've been a union rep for a long time and my union has a standing orders committee that looks over every motion submitted to conference to see if it meets the rules to be debated. We've just witnessed the worst crime against young children in living memory and it is a crime in which we, as a nation, bear a significant degree of responsibility due to our historic role in allowing mass Jewish migration to Palestine on the condition that nothing should take place that harms the Palestinians already living there, and many subsequent actions up to and including during the genocide of the last three years itself.

This crime wasn't enabled by people who display overtly racist verbal behaviour. It was enabled by people who consider themselves non-racist but whose attitudes and actions demonstrate that they have no real empathy for Palestinians and no sense of their humanity. Zionism isn't a racism that necessarily announces itself as such. It is a racism that renders Palestinians - to a greater or lesser extent - invisible and undeserving of equal empathy and concern, because Jewish feelings and beliefs are so much more important. Recognising it as a form of racism is not a slur on anyone who is in any way influenced by this belief - which is probably all of us at one time or another. It is an invitation to recognise the way in which this belief has corrupted our individual and collective humanity - and how it has done so - to the extent that we have allowed this genocide to happen.
