‘He’s pulled off a socialist coup!’: Jacob Rees-Mogg on Burnham’s far Left move | The Daily T

The Daily T Podcast

In today’s special Daily T: On The Road, Camilla Tominey and Tim Stanley speak to Jacob Rees-Mogg about day two of the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham. Speaking to Camilla and Tim in front of a live audience, Mr Rees-Mogg reacts to his viral interview with Tucker Carlson and argues the Prime Minister has brought Margaret Thatcher back into relevance by mentioning her in his speeches.

He criticises Burnham for “taking the reins of power” and about-turning on his promises on Europe to the people of Makerfield, and accuses the PM of grasping power and moving “far Left” of Labour’s 2024 manifesto. Camilla, Tim and Jacob also discuss: their definitions of Englishness in light of Suella Braverman’s comments on her national identity, the Green Party’s motion defining Zionism as racism, and how Britain benefits from supporting Israel.

Daily T-ers: Would you like to see Jacob Rees-Mogg run as an MP again? 🔵
Let us know what you think in the comments... 😄

Imagine if Burnham had been honest to his Makerfield voters; I’m going to hit pensions, raise taxes, do nothing meaningful about national security, immigration or defence, rejoin the EU and sit back and let welfare spiral out of control, would they still vote for him? He became PM based on a pack of lies.

Brexit wasn’t about “being European”. It was about how we’re governed.

Margaret Thatcher was a heroine. She liberated the working-class from the flat cap-ism the socialists intended to keep the class pigeon-holed forever. Home ownership blossomed and then boomed. The consumer economy soared. Most of the consumers were of course working-class. Burnham wants the working-class to return to flat cap-ism where socialism believes it belongs. The working-class in the view of socialism needs to know its proper place in the scheme of things.

When Labour destroy the economy they will blame it on Thatcher and Brexit.

Ha! Nigel Farage didn't walk away from from the Tories...the Tories walked away from him! (Maastricht treaty!)

I'm pretty happy Tim pulled Mogg up on the English ethnicity thing. The idea that no one is really English because he has American (who are probably ethnically English anyway) and Welsh ancestry is nonsense. It's just a fact that English people are a distinct ethnicity.

To move more far left is the same as to move away from the citizenry. They only care about their ideology that has wrought so much destruction.

"He grasped power and moved far left". So did the Torys!!!!!

Good on Tim. I agree with him fully. I don’t think much follows from just acknowledging that the English ethnic group exists. But it’s profoundly irritating and frankly offensive that every other group on the planet get recognition. But the English don’t. Uniquely in all the world!

The greens should be discussed in the same manner as the AFD are in Germany.

Being English and British are not synonymous and haven’t been used as such by foreigners or some English people for a long time.

Burnham wants to go back go the 1880s.

I’m not even an ethnat but find JRM’s denial of the English as an ethnic group incredibly offensive and pretty aggravating. He acknowledges the Scots, Irish and the Welsh, why is it just us who don’t get to have our identity recognised? Why is trying to erase it somehow considered morally justifiable to JRM? Tim is right, he is gaslighting.

How can we sort out our politics when we don't even know who we are or whether we have an identity.
If the conservatives can't sort this simple fact it remains a centrist left party and will never attract those that want to preserve what identity we have left.
