Rock and Roll Suicide saved my life. 34 years ago, I was raging alcoholic in a terminal freefall. While driving 80 mph on the Interstate, I was at rock bottom considering moving the steering wheel to the right just enough to go off the road into the trees. This song came on my stereo. I heard it a zillion times, but it was the first time I really understood why someone would kill themselves. It was an eternal moment when time stopped at high speed. “Oh no, Love. You’re not alone!… Give me your hand. You’re wonderful”
That moment brought me back from the brink. I choose to live. I have had a drink since. It was hard, but I am still here. Thanks, Dave.

Bowie is one of those rare artists whose passing way really hurt us. A very intelligent artist.

The guitar and the arrangements both were the work of the immortal Mick Ronson.

This album changed everything.   In my school people started wearing their hair like Ziggy.   Rock was never the same after this album.

Pro tip: Bowie is so massively influential that almost literally everything he did was ahead of its time.

Bowie was a genius. With Ziggy he created and tore down a rock god in under 40 minutes. I was 15 when it came out and paved the way for Diamond Dogs during a time when the stereo was in the living room. I listened and sang along with corded headphones and my parents didn’t know what to think. But they kept buying the albums on my wish list. ❤

When he first hit it big Bowie was asked by a reporter how it felt to be a rock star. "I'm not a rock star. I'm an artist and Rock-n-Roll is my medium." Brilliant!

However Isaac came to the notion that this is a 'concept' album it's doing him no favours in 'hearing' this music. He's trying hard to work out the 'story' while hearing the engineering, as the 'Bowie-ness' (Ziggy-ness ?...) sails by. :cat-orange-whistling:

Possibly one of the most influential albums ever. When it was released, it turned 70s music on its ear.

Bowie's whole way of singing, his whole musical persona, changes from album to album. This Ziggy voice is not the same as the Young Americans voice, is not the same as the Let's Dance voice.

I worked with Bowie in the early 90s, at Giant Station, a week of high steel building the stage and an MTV gig where he recorded  the iconic "I want my MTV"  TV spots in different languages. He was in a hurry with dozens of interviews before performing, asked if we could get him in and out, but took the time to shake each of our hands and learn our names. A Real British Gentleman. That night was the very last time he performed the song "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars"

Mick Ronson was the Bowie guitarist and he was a classically trained musician. Ronson also done the arranging and often introduced strings into the arrangement.

Ziggy stardust is about an alien Rock star who comes to earth to warn of the apocalypse

Bowie being interviewed is almost as compelling. He was so effortlessly smart and charming.

Dude, you just stumbled upon one of the most important rock albums of all time. Bowie's influence upon the decades that followed can't be overestimated, and it was this album that cast the mold for punk, glam-rock, rock opera, the pop-rock of the 80s, etc.
A rockstar playing a rockstar playing a rockstar..
He was the first to show us how transparent, malleable and  plastic the contemporary pop star really is, and like any engineered messiah, we prop them up and then tear them down. Some of us got the darker message that runs through this masterpiece, but most people just enjoyed the hooks and the rebellious vibe. Either way, it is a cornerstone.

Bowie was a total class act. He never asked 'will they like it' - he did what he wanted, and we liked it. His last album was basically a goodbye as he knew he was dying. I still can't believe he's gone. He seemed almost ageless while he was here.

Mick Ronson was his guitarist in those days. Mick also arranged the music. He was an amazing musician, a perfect compliment to Bowie.

"Wham bam thank you ma'am" is an informal phrase for a quick, unromantic, and hasty sexual encounter.
