I've been following your videos since you first started measuring out the clearing, then the location of your foundation supports and tyres for your roundhouse. I don't know if you'll see this comment, because you have a million to read, but I just want to say thank you. Thank you for your tireless endeavours, your honesty when things go awry, your teachable spirit, and your incredible perseverance through all you've gone through. You fill me with hope in a world where there's so much...well, sadness and entitlement and selfishness. You and Dot live a different way. Its truly inspirational and I'm so thankful for you both and your way of life and the way you have invited so many to join with you on the journey.

Please know that you are so respected and loved, and I'm one of many, I'm sure, who love what you do, and are comforted in life by your example of learning as you go, adapting, remaining positive and finding a way through. Nice job,  Thats is a conveyer hanging reduction gear box,  the motor pinion normally drives the main gear via the intermediate. In your installation you are driving the main gear so the intermediate gear thrust is reversed and not mitigated.  The torque rating is for input on the primary drive NOT the final shaft, the only high radial load is from belt forces to that is why the pinion had a larger roller elements.  . Taper roller will be a move forward but you will need to play around with shims and thrust spring, remember the gasket will add to your dimensions which is why thrust spring will help. Cheek SKF bearings specs on line and  SEW gearboxes.  Finally look at a heavier weight lubricant  
On the screw bottle adjustment wrap Denso tape to stop water getting in.  Well done you nailed the failure

The failure of the first bearing might have caused the main shaft to drop enough to put pressure on the gears and bearings in the gearbox, contributing to the second bearing failure. Kudos for maintaining quality service and repairs on your projects.

I doubt you'll see this mate but you may have some bimetal corrosion happening between the cast iron bearing housing and the steel of the outer bearing race.  In my industry we use this lithium bearing grease(good for Orings, stainless steel to resist galling) called Aqua Shield.  It is a thick, viscous green grease we call Aquasnot.  It does wonders on shafts and bearings and can be injected into grease zerks as well.  Very good in saltwater applications and lasts forever!  Keep up the good work man!

One of the benefits of helical gears that you didn't note is that the force transfer is smoother, as the subsequent tooth has already taken the load before the previous tooth is completely unloaded. So it reduces chatter and backlash.

Hi Kris, I'm a retired vibration specialist and thoroughly enjoying your videos which hit the spot for me. I spent over 40 yrs solving machine vibration issues (Gas Turbines, Pumps, Motors and Francis Turbines mainly). I saw a significant proportion of vibration issues caused by bearings making noise or causing high vibration, in high value machines that were monitored, so they were caught before failure. One common problem type I encountered was incorrect use of bearing type, the most common issue being the use of Roller bearings with insufficient radial load. In the manufacturers catalogue there was always a quoted a minimum radial load to prevent the rollers from skidding, but this was sometimes ignored, resulting in squealing noises and degradation. So cylindrical  rollers can only be used where there is sufficient radial load, eg belt drive and in gearboxes with sufficient radial load and a double acting thrust bearing for axial load. Some smaller gearboxes have used a single taper roller to carry the normal thrust, and one ball bearing at the other end, however the danger is that sudden load reversals or large fluctuations in load can do damage. All of these cases are cost based and carry some risk, so use of two taper roller bearings is a safer option, but there has to be preload to prevent axial movement under fluctuating load or load reversal. This is accomplished by accurate shimming of an opposed taper roller pair at one end. Single taper rollers at each end (opposed) can be possible, but then thermal expansion is greater and should  be accounted for. In many pumps using rolling element bearings with oil  bath lubrication, there is a simple fan directly fixed to the shaft so that there is always a cooling air flow while the machine runs, that might be possible on the output shaft, in your case if you felt it necessary. Your diagnosis seemed good to me and well done for tackling projects like this. Dave

A concrete pad at the waterwheel would be convenient for doing maintenance and repairs. What a lovely shed with ferns growing out of the walls. So neat!

The gearbox is probably made for the "small" shaft to be the input using a pulley drive application. I think the roller bearing is probably there to handle the extra lateral force of the pulley (strap tension).  Your idea of a taper bearing is a good one. will probably fix the issue ;) good explanation of what's happening inside there! When I have adjustment  or mounting bolts with exposed threads I put heat shrink on them after a good coating of anti seize. It seals water out and helps prevent oxidation and it makes removing them  a breeze.

This channel is by far my favourite. Love the technical knowledge and explanation.
